Titre : Characteristics of social skills for adults with intellectual disability, autism and PDD-NOS Type de document : Texte imprimé et/ou numérique Auteurs : Johnny L. MATSON, Auteur ; Timothy DEMPSEY, Auteur ; Santino V. LOVULLO, Auteur Année de publication : 2009 Article en page(s) : p.207-213 Langues : Anglais (eng) Mots-clés : MESSIER Social-skills Intellectual-disability Adults ASD Index. décimale : PER Périodiques Résumé : Social skills deficits and excesses are defining characteristics of intellectual disability (ID). Despite this, there is an unfortunate lack of research on the patterns and profiles of social behavior, particularly with adults who are severely intellectually disabled. This paper provides an analysis of social skill patterns for adults living in residential programs in the southeastern United States using the Matson Evaluation of Social Skills for Individuals with sEvere Retardation (MESSIER) as the dependent variable. A diagnosis of an autism spectrum disorder (ASD) was associated with more serious social disability. Items that were most commonly noted as problematic for individuals with ASD included preferring to be alone, avoiding eye contact, and exhibiting peculiar or odd mannerisms. Additionally, the presence of blindness and motoric impairment was associated with a higher degree of social skills impairment. The implications of these data for assessment, treatment, and future research are discussed. MATSON, Auteur Année de publication : 2011 Article en page(s) : p.119-125 Langues : Anglais (eng) Mots-clés : ASD Autism Children Adolescents BASC-2 Index. décimale : PER Périodiques Résumé : As the Behavioral Assessment System for Children, Second Edition (BASC-2) is often used to aid in diagnosis it is important to discern how children and adolescents with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) score on the BASC-2 compared to typically developing controls. This study compared scores of typically developing children and adolescents to those diagnosed with ASD on all subscales and composites of the BASC-2. Except for the aggression subscale, anxiety subscale, and the internalizing composite, the ASD group scored significantly higher on all clinical subscales and composites (i.e., hyperactivity, conduct problems, externalizing composite, depression, atypicality, withdrawal, attention problems, and the Behavioral Symptoms Index). However, the ASD group scored significantly lower on the adaptability composite and all subscales comprising this composite. Titre : Children assessed for Autism Spectrum Disorder: Developmental delay and change over time in BDI-2 developmental quotients Type de document : Texte imprimé et/ou numérique Auteurs : Lindsey W. WILLIAMS, Auteur ; Johnny L. MATSON, Auteur ; Rachel L. GOLDIN, Auteur ; Hilary L. ADAMS, Auteur Article en page(s) : p.1500-1507 Langues : Anglais (eng) Mots-clés : Autism Spectrum Disorder Developmental change Developmental quotient BDI-2 Index. décimale : PER Périodiques Résumé : Individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) often have overall developmental delays and delays in developmental domains outside of the core ASD symptoms. Research results have been mixed regarding the stability of level of functioning over time in young children with ASD symptoms. Elements that influence development over time in young children with ASD symptoms are an important area of research. Early assessment and intervention is critical to improving prognosis, though effectiveness of intervention depends on a number of factors with some researchers suggesting IQ or overall functioning may influence the degree or rapidity of treatment effects. Using the Battelle Developmental Inventory, this study investigates the effect of overall developmental quotient (DQ) at first assessment on subsequent DQ scores, including scores in communication and adaptive domains in a sample of toddlers evincing significant ASD symptoms. Format : 23,5cm x 15,5cm x 3cm ISBN/ISSN/EAN : 978-0-12-373606-2 Note générale : Bibliogr., Index Langues : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : AUT-E AUT-E - L'Autisme - Accompagnement et Qualité de Vie Résumé : Autism spectrum disorder has received increasing research in recent years, with more information on assessment and treatment than can be readily assimilated from primary literature by clinicians. Clinical Assessment and Intervention of Autism summarizes evidence-based assessments and intervention for Autism across the life-span, providing clinicians with a practical overview of how best to assess and treat this disorder. The book begins with a discussion of what warrants a determination of being "evidence based" and a description of the disorder from a life span perspective. The book also provides a chapter on differential diagnosis of autism relative to other disorders. What follows are separate sections on assessment and intervention. These chapters discuss first how to assess and then separately how to treat behavioral problems, communication and social skills issues, academic and vocational skills, and the use of pharmacology and an assessment of possible pharmacological effects. Intended for practitioners assessing and treating children with developmental delays, the book provides clinicians with best practices for assessing and treating delays associated with autism. Specific comorbid disorders are examined through the review of core symptoms, prognostic and diagnostic issues and treatment options for children on the ASD spectrum.
Featured topics include:
Challenging behaviors in children with ASD.
Conditions ranging from feeding and gastrointestinal disorders to epilepsy.
Developmental coordination disorder (DCD).
Intellectual disability (ID).
Methods and procedures for measuring comorbid psychological, medical and motor disorders.
Comorbid Conditions Among Children with Autism Spectrum Disorders is a must-have resource for researchers, clinicians and professionals and graduate students across such fields as clinical child, school and developmental psychology, child and adolescent psychiatry and social work as well as rehabilitation medicine/therapy, behavioral therapy, pediatrics and educational psychology.
