Handbook of Early Intervention for Autism Spectrum Disorders / Jonathan TARBOX
Titre : Handbook of Early Intervention for Autism Spectrum Disorders : Research, Policy, and Practice Type de document : Texte imprimé et/ou numérique Auteurs : Jonathan TARBOX, Directeur de publication ; Dennis R. DIXON, Directeur de publication ; Peter STURMEY, Directeur de publication ; Johnny L. MATSON, Directeur de publication Editeur : Berlin [Allemagne] : Springer Année de publication : 2014 Collection : Autism and Child Psychopathology Series, ISSN 2192-922X Importance : 834 p. Format : 16cm x 24cm x 5cm ISBN/ISSN/EAN : 978-1-4939-0400-6 Note générale : Bibliogr. Index Langues : Anglais (eng) Mots-clés : Economie Verbal Behavior Index. décimale : APP-D APP-D - Interventions Educatives - Généralités Résumé : Current rates of autism diagnoses have been cause for concern and research as well as rumor and misinformation. Important questions surround the condition: how early can an accurate diagnosis be made? At what age should intervention start? How can parents recognize warning signs? And what causes autism in the first place?
There are no easy answers, but the Handbook of Early Intervention for Autism Spectrum Disorders gives researchers, practitioners, and academics the science and guidance to better understand and intervene. Background chapters survey the history of professional understanding of the disorders and the ongoing debate over autism as a single entity or a continuum. Chapters on best methods in screening, assessment, and diagnosis reflect the transition between the DSM-V and older diagnostic criteria. And at the heart of the book, the intervention section ranges from evidence-based strategies for developing core skills to ethical concerns, cultural considerations, and controversial treatments.
Included in the Handbook's broad-based coverage:
- Designing curriculum programs for children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD).
- Mainstream education for children with ASD.
- Teaching independent living skills to children with ASD.
- Social skills and play.
- Behavioral and mental health disorders in children with ASD.
- Training and supporting caregivers in evidence-based practices.
- Teaching cognitive skills to children with ASD.
The Handbook of Early Intervention for Autism Spectrum Disorders is a comprehensive reference for researchers, professors, and graduate students as well as clinicians and other scientist-practitioners in clinical child and school psychology, child and adolescent psychiatry, social work, rehabilitation, special education, and pediatric medicine. [article]
Titre : Meditation as a Potential Therapy for Autism: A Review Type de document : Texte imprimé et/ou numérique Auteurs : Sonia SEQUEIRA, Auteur ; Ahmed MAHIUDDIN, Auteur Année de publication : 2012 Article en page(s) : 11 p. Langues : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : PER Périodiques Résumé : Autism is a chronic neurodevelopmental disorder of unknown cause that affects approximately 1–3 percent of children and four times more boys than girls. Its prevalence is global and its social impact is devastating. In autism, the brain is unable to process sensory information normally. Instead, simple stimuli from the outside world are experienced as overwhelmingly intense and strain the emotional centers of the brain. A stress response to the incoming information is initiated that destabilizes cognitive networks and short-circuits adequate behavioral output. As a result, the child is unable to respond adequately to stimulation and initiate social behavior towards family, friends, and peers. In addition, these children typically face immune-digestive disorders that heighten social fears, anxieties, and internal conflicts. While it is critical to treat the physical symptoms, it is equally vital to offer an evidence-based holistic solution that harmonizes both their emotional and physical well-being as they move from childhood into adult life. Here, we summarize evidence from clinical studies and neuroscience research that suggests that an approach built on yogic principles and meditative tools is worth pursuing. Desired outcomes include relief of clinical symptoms of the disease, greater relaxation, and facilitated expression of feelings and skills, as well as improved family and social quality of life. Présentation : ill. Format : 17,5cm x 25cm x 1,5cm ISBN/ISSN/EAN : 978-2-7420-0836-0 Note générale : Bibliogr. Langues : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : SCI-D SCI-D - Neurosciences Résumé : This volume provides advances in current knowledge on the diagnosis, neurobiology, pharmacologic therapy, and rehabilitation methods in autism, suggesting a potential influence on professional practice and enabling an up-to-date approach to effective diagnosis and treatment. Autism is an extremely complex neurodevelopmental disorder that is expressed in a spectrum of phenotypes and is characterized by impaired reciprocal social communication and stereotyped patterns of interests and activities. Its aetiopathogenesis remains poorly understood. It has become clear that causative genes interact with environmental factors in generating the disorder, but the molecular and pathogenic mechanisms causing the expression of the resulting mutations are not at all obvious. The candidate genes implicate an involvement of numerous brain regions and a concomitant malfunctioning of neurotransmitter, immunologic, and other mechanisms. These topics are reviewed in different presentations. Additionally, since the disorder lasts over the lifetime, other chapters focus on early intervention, discussing the most incisive rehabilitation models in their original formulation and the results achieved with the same or similar protocols in Italian centres. Finally, strong attention is paid to the psychopharmacologic options for the condition of autism per se and for its associated, very frequent, comorbidities.
