These students face daunting social, emotional and communication challengesChallenges. While these institutions typically offer disability servicesDisability services, mental health counseling, career counseling, and health services to students with special needs, students with AS and HFA present unique needs that differ in many respects from the needs of students requesting accommodations for learning disabilities, especially in the area of nonacademic supports such as social and emotional supports. Many colleges are not equipped to handle these challengesChallenges and there is a poor data base of well-informed interventionsInterventions for college-going adults with autism. This chapter presents and analyzes available and emerging support systems for students with ASD. The literature cites a number of sources of support for students with ASD to help them navigate campus life. One source of support comes from families, especially parentsParents. Another involves support offered by offices for students with disabilities. Two sources of institutional support have received much attention in the recent literature: transition programs and mentoringMentoring programs. These support systems can help postsecondary students with ASD successfully pursue an academic degree in an environment that supports their social acclimatization, independence, and well-being. Titre : Psychological Diagnosis of Adults with Autism Spectrum Disorder Type de document : Texte imprimé et/ou numérique Auteurs : Katya RUBINSTEIN, Auteur Année de publication : 2019 Importance : p.21-29 Langues : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : ADU-A ADU-A - Adultes - Généralités Résumé : This chapter examines the factors that bring a previously undiagnosed adult to wonder whether he might be autistic and to undergo an evaluation by a qualified diagnostician. The main tools used by professionals for an initial screening of spectrum symptoms, as well as for in-depth diagnosis, are identified according to the criteria of the American Psychiatric Diagnostic Manual (DSM-5DSM-5). Finally, the unique challengesChallenges of diagnosing autism in adulthood are presented. Adults with higher intellectual functioning often adopt effective coping strategies that make it difficult to accurately identify autism symptoms. Given the complexity of diagnosing HFA in adulthood and the lack of “sensitive” diagnostic tools, it is important for future studies to develop new tools.
