Type de document : Texte imprimé et/ou numérique Auteurs : Matthew TINSLEY, Auteur ; Sarah HENDRICKX, Auteur Editeur : Londres [Angleterre] : Jessica Kingsley Publishers Année de publication : 2008 Importance : 144 p. Format : 23,4cm x 15,6cm x 1cm ISBN/ISSN/EAN : 978-1-84310-609-8 Note générale : Bibliogr., Index Langues : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : ASP-J ASP-J - Asperger - Vie Sociale Résumé : Asperger Syndrome and Alcohol exposes the unexplored problem of people with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASDs) using alcohol as a coping mechanism to deal with everyday life. Alcohol can relieve the anxiety of social situations and make those with ASDs feel as though they can fit in. Ultimately, however, reliance on alcohol can lead the user down a path of self-destruction and exacerbate existing problems.
Utilising their professional and personal experience, the authors provide an overview of ASDs and of alcohol abuse, and explore current knowledge about where the two overlap. Tinsley explores his own personal history as someone with an ASD who has experienced and beaten alcohol addiction. He discusses how the impact of his diagnosis and his understanding of the condition played a huge part in his recovery, and how by viewing his life through the prism of autism, his confusion has been replaced by a greater understanding of himself and the world around him.
This inspiring book on an under-researched area will be of interest to professionals working with people with ASDs, as well as individuals with ASDs who may be dealing with alcohol or substance misuse, and their families.Permalink : https://www.cra-rhone-alpes.org/cid/opac_css/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=721 Asperger Syndrome and Alcohol : Drinking to Cope? - William Stillman, author of Autism and the God Connection and Demystifying the Autistic Experience
Many people suffer from feelings of stress and anxiety in their everyday lives. For people with Asperger Syndrome (AS), this stress can be particularly difficult to manage. On a daily basis people with AS must fit into a world that seems totally foreign to them and this can increase feelings of alienation and anxiety, making life's challenges especially hard to cope with.
The first book on anxiety written specifically for adults with Asperger Syndrome, this book offers practical advice on how individuals with AS can manage their anxiety more effectively. As a person with AS who has struggled with feelings of anxiety and learnt how to overcome them, Nick Dubin shares his own tried and tested solutions along with up-to-date research on stress management for individuals with AS, including a chapter on Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT). Dubin explores the key problem areas that can lead to anxiety for people with AS such as lack of social skills, difficulties establishing romantic relationships and uncertainty about employment.
Asperger Syndrome and Anxiety provides real solutions to a common problem and is essential reading for anyone with AS who has trouble managing stress. The book will also be of interest to family members, teachers and other professionals working with individuals with AS.Permalink : https://www.cra-rhone-alpes.org/cid/opac_css/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=873 Asperger Syndrome and Anxiety : A Guide to Successful Stress Management [Texte imprimé et/ou numérique] / Nick DUBIN, Auteur ; Valerie GAUS, Préfacier, etc. . - Londres [Angleterre] : Jessica Kingsley Publishers, 2009 . - 224 p. ; 23,4vm x 15,6cm x 1cm.

In addition to clearly depicting the extent of the irreparable harm caused by bullying, he tells us how easily to recognize and stop this destructive behavior at the individual, in the classroom, and at school wide levels.'
- Stephen M. Shore, Board of Directors of the Autism Society of America, the Asperger's Association of New England, and other related organizations
'Not only will Asperger Syndrome and Bullying help former victims piece together the "why"s and "how"s of prior trauma, but educational professionals also are served well to read this book. For giving them much to choose from, Dubin meticulously outlines (and provides commentary on) every available community-based strategy and school program designed to combat those atmospheres that condone bullying. … His book is a wonderful addition to the growing literature currently investigating the environment of bullying, the culture of bullying, and the myths we once believed about it. … Asperger Syndrome and Bullying serves as a great sociological analysis, yes, but readers are provided an added layer - hearing a writer heal before our eyes.'
- from the Foreword by Michael John Carley, executive director of GRASP, The Global and Regional Asperger Syndrome Partnership
Bullying is a serious problem for people with Asperger Syndrome (AS), both at school and in the workplace, and displaying "different" behavior, such as not understanding social rules or hand-flapping, exacerbates the risk of being victimized.
Writing in an accessible, informal style, the author describes the bullying behavior he and other individuals have experienced, and the effect this has had on their lives. He outlines the reasons for bullying behavior and the danger of persistent recurrence if it remains unchecked, as well as the critical importance of "involving the bystander". Nick Dubin goes on to provide a range of effective strategies to address bullies and bullying that can be applied by parents, professionals, schools, and individuals being bullied. He stresses the importance of peer intervention, empathetic teachers, and verbal self-defense, and shows how lack of support, condemning of "tale telling," or even blaming the victim reinforces bullying.
This book offers individuals with AS who are being bullied the opportunity to see that they are not alone, and it is an invaluable source of advice for parents, teachers, professionals and personnel managers.
Nick Dubin was diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome in 2004. He holds a Bachelor's Degree in Communications from Oakland University, a Master's Degree in Learning Disabilities from the University of Detroit Mercy, and a Specialist Degree in Psychology from the Michigan School of Professional Psychology. The contributors each have different personalities and experiences, but together they provide a range of strategies to encourage people with Asperger's syndrome to achieve the social relationships they desire.'
- Professor Tony Attwood, author of The Complete Guide to Asperger's Syndrome
Social interaction among neurotypical people is complex and in many ways illogical. To the person with Asperger Syndrome (AS) it is also woefully unintuitive. In this book, adults with AS discuss social relationships, offer advice and support for others with AS and provide necessary insights into AS perspectives for those working and interacting with them.
The contributors evaluate a range of social contexts and relationship aspects, including:
- online relationships - a worldwide social network based on non-verbal communication,
- the unwritten rules of neurotypical socialising,
- the need for mutual understanding between those with AS and neurotypicals,
- the effects of struggling socially on one's self-esteem and frame of mind, and
- the opportunities provided by social skills workshops or interest groups.
This is essential reading for adults with AS, their family and friends, as well as service providers and other professionals providing support for people with AS in adult life.Permalink : https://www.cra-rhone-alpes.org/cid/opac_css/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=404 Asperger Syndrome and Social Relationships [Texte imprimé et/ou numérique] / Genevieve EDMONDS, Auteur ; Luke BEARDON, Auteur . - Londres [Angleterre] : Jessica Kingsley Publishers, 2008 . - 170 p. ; 15,5cm x 23cm x 1cm. - (Adults Speak Out about Asperger Syndrome) .

Yet even when evidence shows that people with these conditions often pose little threat to society, or lack a core understanding as to why their actions break the law, the "sex offender legal regime" doesn't allow any room to take the disability into account.
This ground-breaking book offers a multi-disciplinary examination of how unjust sex offense laws trap vulnerable groups such as those with developmental disabilities. Drawing on research, empirical evidence and including case studies, experts from the fields of law, ethics, psychology and sociology explore what steps should be taken in order to ensure that laws are just and take into consideration factors such as the vulnerability of the perpetrators. Investigating the consequences caused by public hysteria over sex offenses, this book highlights the judicial failure to protect defendants with developmental disabilities in the context of the unjust and hyper-punishment of all those charged with sex offenses. Proposing a new way forward based on research and evidence-based sentencing for sex offenses, and elimination of the sex offender registry, this book offers an informed and compassionate view that is essential for all professionals working in this field.[Résumé d'Auteur/Editeur]

Format : 21,5cm x 27,8cm 2,1cm ISBN/ISSN/EAN : 978-1-84905-035-7 Note générale : Webogr, Index Langues : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : ASP-J ASP-J - Asperger - Vie Sociale Résumé : Bullying is a serious and pervasive issue for people with autism and Asperger Syndrome. This photocopiable workbook encourages adults who have been involved with bullying - as either victims or perpetrators - to explore what bullying is, the effects it can have and how it can be tackled successfully.
In this accessible and jargon-free book, with a wealth of case studies and summaries, readers are invited to consider the thoughts, feelings and actions associated with bullying and offered helpful strategies for dealing with it. The book comprises a general introduction to bullying, followed by sections that examine the issue from the perspectives of victim and perpetrator. This dual approach is designed to stamp out the problem at its source - the bully - rather than simply supporting the victim. It also recognises that while people on the spectrum are all too often bullied for being 'different', character traits such as difficulty with empathy mean they may unintentionally bully others.
This practical book can be worked through independently or with any of the wide range of professionals involved in supporting an adult with autism or Asperger Syndrome and other learning disabilities, to reach a new level of understanding about bullying.
Anna Tickle Clin Psy D is a clinical psychologist. She became interested in autism and Asperger Syndrome shortly after she began her doctorate and volunteered at 'Aspire' - a National Autistic Society group for adults with Asperger Syndrome.
Bettina Stott is currently studying towards her MA in Autism at Sheffield Hallam University. She has worked predominantly in the areas of autism and Asperger Syndrome for many years and currently works in the development of accessible and user-friendly services for individuals with Asperger Syndrome.

Wendy Lawson felt she had a knack for upsetting people and was surprised to be told that she 'did friendship rather well'. In her frank and thoughtful analysis of what makes and breaks friendships, she explores what it means to have friends or be a friend – even a friend to oneself; what happens when times are tough and friends are scarce; whether one can be a 'good friend' without effort; and what other kinds of friendships there are, whether imaginary, animal or inanimate. These ideas are accompanied by practical examples, poetry and stories.
Insightful and relevant to people both on and off the autism spectrum, Friendships: The Aspie Way is a fresh approach to a universal issue in human relationships.
Wendy Lawson is a mother of four, who was originally diagnosed as being intellectually disabled, then in her teens, as being schizophrenic, and finally in 1994, as having an autism spectrum disorder. She has been married, separated and divorced, has experienced the death of one of her teenage sons, gone through moving from one country to another, losing friends and status due to being openly gay, faced ill health and recently come to terms with the fact that she is aging! Her youngest son was diagnosed at the age of 12 as having Asperger's Syndrome. As a qualified counsellor, social worker and psychologist Wendy has operated her own private practice for many years.Permalink : https://www.cra-rhone-alpes.org/cid/opac_css/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=222 Friendships : The Aspie Way [Texte imprimé et/ou numérique] / Wendy LAWSON, Auteur ; Emma WALL, Préfacier, etc. . - Londres [Angleterre] : Jessica Kingsley Publishers, 2006 . - 176 p. : ill. ; 13,3cm x 21,6cm x 1cm.
