D.W. Winnicott, perhaps the greatest English psychoanalyst, was world-famous for his work with disturbed children ; his ideas throw invaluable light on a whole range of psychological and social issues.
His almost uncanny ability to re-creat in words the strange world of early infancy and the mother-child relationship is shown both in major theoretical texts like Playing and Reality and in the popular radio talks collected in The Child,The Family, and the outside world. This present volume brings together some of winnicott’s most important unpublished papers on more general themes, his mature thoughts on feminism and freedom,depression and delinquency, the pill,the monarchy, mental health and the meaning of democracy. All are characteristically undogmatic and deeply human ; above all, they are connected by the belief that rational planning has to take into account our unconscious needs and desires. |
