This chapter provides a current overview of behavioral and psychosocial treatments for individuals with ASD. The approaches include empirically based methods as well as popular interventions designed to address core and associated symptoms. The chapter includes reviews of major comprehensive treatment programs and educational programs designed for young children with ASD, as well as targeted treatments to improve core deficits. Interventions designed to reduce problem behaviors, and alternative treatments commonly used in ASD are also addressed. Finally, trends and directions for future behavioral and psychosocial treatment research including a focus on implementation in community settings and designing treatments for older individuals with ASD are discussed. |
