"How can I make autism funny and interesting for people, instead of scary or sad"? Thoughts like these were on Elijah's mind when he decided to give standup comedy a try...This new DVD features his first public performance at age 13, as well as his most recent musings on being a teen in special ed. Whether in comedy clubs or at conferences where he presents with his mom, (Valerie Paradiz, PhD, educator and author of Elijah's Cup), Elijah's quirky slant on parents, school, music and the lives of people inhabiting the "typical" world are raising eyebrows and getting laughs. Here are five chapters containing four comedy routines and a chat with Elijah's mom who tells the story of Elijah's emergence as a comic. Paradiz also shares helpful information for families, therapists and fellow educators on topics ranging from advocacy to fostering deep and foused interests in children with autism spectrum-differences (ASDs). Here's Elijah's comedy: "Joe Schtick" - Elijah's debut performance. Most of the jokes were favorites borrowed from books. He had a catalogue memory for humor from a very early age, but this was the first time he got up the gumption to get on stage. "Theme Song Psychic" - This is one of Elijah's first standup acts as "Mr. Inevitable". It contains his own original material. And he's pretty good at air guitar, too! "Autism Act" - This act the the fruit of Elijah's appearance on MTV's "True Life", which told the story of how he decided to come out on stage as a person diagnosed with autism. A bold move, and one more giant step for mankind! Here, he's performing for his county legislature in Upstate, New York. "Inappropriate" - Join Elijah in this exploration of the ironies of the educational system. It's Mr. Inevitable's satiric look at the state of "Special" education and his own celebration of being a "sped". C'mon over to the dark side. [Résumé d'Auteur/Editeur] |
