Particularly understudied are the hopes parents have for long-term outcomes for their child. A cross-sectional focus group design was used and six focus groups were completed. These groups included parents of (1) preschool aged children who were recently diagnosed, (2) children in early elementary school, (3) children in later elementary school, (4) children in middle school, (5) children in high school, and (6) children who are adults with ASD. Results indicated 77.4% of the data were devoted to hopes for the children's independence, happiness, and skill improvement; increased authentic socially significant relationships; and future employment. Titre : Peer Experiences of Military Spouses with Children with Autism in a Distance Peer Mentoring Program: A Pilot Study Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : Jennifer M.D. KREMKOW, Auteur ; Erinn H. FINKE, Auteur Article en page(s) : p.189-202 Langues : Anglais (eng) Mots-clés : Autism Spectrum Disorder Autistic Disorder Child Humans Mentoring Mentors Military Personnel Peer Group Pilot Projects Spouses Autism Mentor program Military families Online Index. décimale : PER Périodiques Résumé : Previous research has indicated military families with children with autism reported significant difficulties when relocating with their child with autism. One possible relocation support for these families is an online peer mentorship program with another military spouse with a child with autism who has more relocation experience. The purpose of this pilot investigation was to determine the feasibility, acceptability, and collect initial outcome data for an online peer mentorship program for military spouses with children with autism. Results from this study indicated an online peer mentorship program is feasible, and may be a helpful program to support military spouses with children with autism before relocations. Titre : Self-perception of friendship style: Young adults with and without autism spectrum disorder Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : Erinn H. FINKE, Auteur ; Jillian H. MCCARTHY, Auteur ; Natalie A. SARVER, Auteur Index. décimale : PER Périodiques Résumé : BackgroundIt has been reported that people on the autism spectrum have difficulty making and maintaining friendships. Congruence of perspective on friendships and friendship practices may affect the frequency and intensity of friendships, but this is not well understood.AimsThe aims of the current project were to identify the similarities and differences in the broad perspectives and friendship practices of young adults with and without autism.Method and proceduresYoung adults with and without autism between the ages of 18 and 24 years completed an online survey to determine the friendship preferences that most define the perspectives of young adults with autism.Outcomes and resultsThe results identified primarily differences in the broad perspectives and friendship practices of young adults with and without autism spectrum disorder, which may provide a context for understanding the values and priorities that need to be considered as two people (whether they have an autism spectrum disorder diagnosis or not) embark on a new potential friendship, and may help people with autism (as well as clinicians, educators, and caregivers) understand why some friendships flounder and others are established and maintained with relative ease. Titre : Service Delivery Experiences and Intervention Needs of Military Families with Children with ASD Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : Jennifer M. DAVIS, Auteur ; Erinn H. FINKE, Auteur ; Benjamin HICKERSON, Auteur Article en page(s) : p.1748-1761 Langues : Anglais (eng) Mots-clés : Autism Military families Service delivery Survey Index. décimale : PER Périodiques Résumé : The purpose of this study was to describe the experiences of military families with children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) specifically as it relates to relocation. Online survey methodology was used to gather information from military spouses with children with ASD. The finalized dataset included 189 cases. Descriptive statistics and frequency analyses were used to examine participant demographics and service delivery questions. Results indicated the larger sample of military spouses largely confirmed the experiences reported qualitatively in previous studies and contributed information that was previously unknown about variables associated with the access, availability, quality, and frequency of intervention services for military families with children with ASD.
