Titre : Self-perception of friendship style: Young adults with and without autism spectrum disorder Type de document : Texte imprimé et/ou numérique Auteurs : Erinn H. FINKE, Auteur ; Jillian H. MCCARTHY, Auteur ; Natalie A. SARVER, Auteur Index. décimale : PER Périodiques Résumé : BackgroundIt has been reported that people on the autism spectrum have difficulty making and maintaining friendships. Congruence of perspective on friendships and friendship practices may affect the frequency and intensity of friendships, but this is not well understood.AimsThe aims of the current project were to identify the similarities and differences in the broad perspectives and friendship practices of young adults with and without autism.Method and proceduresYoung adults with and without autism between the ages of 18 and 24 years completed an online survey to determine the friendship preferences that most define the perspectives of young adults with autism.Outcomes and resultsThe results identified primarily differences in the broad perspectives and friendship practices of young adults with and without autism spectrum disorder, which may provide a context for understanding the values and priorities that need to be considered as two people (whether they have an autism spectrum disorder diagnosis or not) embark on a new potential friendship, and may help people with autism (as well as clinicians, educators, and caregivers) understand why some friendships flounder and others are established and maintained with relative ease. Videogames appear to offer a uniquely well-suited environment for the emergence of friendships, but it is not known if children with and without ASD attend to and play videogames similarly. Eyetracking technology was used to investigate visual attention of participants matched based on chronological age. Parametric and nonparametric statistical analyses were used and results indicated the groups did not differ on percentage of time spent visually attending to any of the areas of interest, with one possible exception. DAVIS, Auteur ; Erinn H. FINKE, Auteur Année de publication : 2015 Article en page(s) : p.2019-2034 Langues : Anglais (eng) Mots-clés : Autism Therapeutic services Military families Qualitative interview Index. décimale : PER Périodiques Résumé : Military families with a child with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) are underrepresented in the literature. In order to provide appropriate services, research must be done to determine the needs of these families. A qualitative methodology was used to interview military spouses with children with ASD about their experiences with therapeutic services. Overall, results indicate military families with a child with ASD experience challenges associated with both the military lifestyle and having a child with special needs. Due to their membership in two groups prone to support limitations and therapeutic service accessibility issues, military families with a child with ASD may be at additional risk for high levels of stress and difficulty obtaining and maintaining ASD related services. FINKE, Auteur Article en page(s) : p.3047-3064 Langues : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : PER Périodiques Résumé : Autistic people have different preferences for friendship than non-autistic people. The aims of the current project were to determine how autistic people prefer to behave in their friendships and how this compares to the friendship practices reported by non-autistic participants. Autistic (n?=?102) and non-autistic (n?=?107) young adults between the ages of 18 and 24 years completed an online survey comprised of selected questions from the Friendship Questionnaire. Binary logistic regression and multivariate general linear modeling were used to analyze and compare the responses across the groups. Results identified differences in the preferred friendship practices between the participant groups, which may further confirm the Double Empathy Theory and provide a context for understanding the friendship normative practices of autistic people.
