In this chapter, the author breaks down the complex diagnostic criteria and discusses several of the most common characteristics presented when an individual is diagnosed with ASD. The chapter covers the defining characteristics of ASD such as deficits in social communication and social interaction as well as restricted, repetitive patterns of behavior, interests, or activities. This chapter also provides a discussion about other common characteristics and challenges for individuals with ASD such as dietary needs, meltdowns, and sleep disorders. |
