This chapter aims to sensitize clinicians to parents’ common experiences of obtaining and receiving a child’s diagnosis of ASD and the fear, worry, and stress that often accompanies the child’s new diagnostic label. Meaning making is defined and discussed as an important and effective coping strategy that can be used to assist parents. Two theoretical models of meaning making are explored: sense making and benefit finding. The chapter concludes with a review of four principles for practice when working alongside parents of children with ASD as they navigate meaning making across the lifespan. |
