Titre : Siblings and Autism : Stories Spanning Generations and Cultures Type de document : Texte imprimé et/ou numérique Auteurs : Debra L. CUMBERLAND, Directeur de publication ; Bruce E. MILLS, Directeur de publication Editeur : Londres [Angleterre] : Jessica Kingsley Publishers Année de publication : 2010 Importance : 240 p. Présentation : ill. Format : 15,3cm x 22,8cm x 1,5cm ISBN/ISSN/EAN : 978-1-84905-831-5 Langues : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : VIE-E VIE-E - Vie Quotidienne - Fratrie Résumé : What is it like to grow up with a sibling on the autism spectrum? What kind of relationship do such siblings have? How does that relationship change as the siblings get older?
In this moving collection of beautifully-written personal accounts, siblings from a variety of backgrounds, and in different circumstances, share their experiences of growing up with a brother or sister with autism. Despite their many differences, their stories show that certain things are common to the "sibling experience": the emotional terrain of looking on or being overlooked; the confusion of accommodating resentment, love, and helplessness; and above all the yearning to connect across neurological difference.
Siblings and Autism is a thought-provoking book that will appeal to anyone with a personal or professional interest in autism, including parents of siblings of children on the spectrum, teachers, counsellors, and psychologists.
Deb Cumberland is Associate Professor of English and Director of Graduate Studies in English at Winona State University, Minnesota. She teaches literature and creative writing classes, and has published creative nonfiction on autism.
Bruce Mills is Professor of English at Kalamazoo College, Michigan, and has served as the Board Chair of The Gray Center for Social Learning and Understanding, a non-profit organization that works with individuals on the autism spectrum. He has also published creative nonfiction on autism. Deb has a brother with autism, and Bruce has a son on the spectrum and a neuro-typical daughter.
