Titre : The Experience of Military Families with Children with Autism Spectrum Disorders During Relocation and Separation Type de document : Texte imprimé et/ou numérique Auteurs : Jennifer M. DAVIS, Auteur ; Erinn H. FINKE, Auteur Année de publication : 2015 Article en page(s) : p.2019-2034 Langues : Anglais (eng) Mots-clés : Autism Therapeutic services Military families Qualitative interview Index. décimale : PER Périodiques Résumé : Military families with a child with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) are underrepresented in the literature. In order to provide appropriate services, research must be done to determine the needs of these families. A qualitative methodology was used to interview military spouses with children with ASD about their experiences with therapeutic services. Overall, results indicate military families with a child with ASD experience challenges associated with both the military lifestyle and having a child with special needs. Due to their membership in two groups prone to support limitations and therapeutic service accessibility issues, military families with a child with ASD may be at additional risk for high levels of stress and difficulty obtaining and maintaining ASD related services. Titre : Service Delivery Experiences and Intervention Needs of Military Families with Children with ASD Type de document : Texte imprimé et/ou numérique Auteurs : Jennifer M. DAVIS, Auteur ; Erinn FINKE, Auteur ; Benjamin HICKERSON, Auteur Article en page(s) : p.1748-1761 Langues : Anglais (eng) Mots-clés : Autism Military families Service delivery Survey Index. décimale : PER Périodiques Résumé : The purpose of this study was to describe the experiences of military families with children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) specifically as it relates to relocation. Online survey methodology was used to gather information from military spouses with children with ASD. The finalized dataset included 189 cases. Descriptive statistics and frequency analyses were used to examine participant demographics and service delivery questions. Results indicated the larger sample of military spouses largely confirmed the experiences reported qualitatively in previous studies and contributed information that was previously unknown about variables associated with the access, availability, quality, and frequency of intervention services for military families with children with ASD. One possible relocation support for these families is an online peer mentorship program with another military spouse with a child with autism who has more relocation experience. The purpose of this pilot investigation was to determine the feasibility, acceptability, and collect initial outcome data for an online peer mentorship program for military spouses with children with autism. Results from this study indicated an online peer mentorship program is feasible, and may be a helpful program to support military spouses with children with autism before relocations. KREMKOW, Auteur ; Erinn H. FINKE, Auteur Article en page(s) : p.1097-1110 Langues : Anglais (eng) Mots-clés : Autism Military families Online training Peer mentor Index. décimale : PER Périodiques Résumé : Several researchers have described a training for mentorship programs; however, few studies have examined the effects of mentor training on mentor knowledge of communication strategies taught in the training. This investigation developed and tested a distance peer mentor training for military spouses with children with autism. Results indicated prospective military spouse mentors scored significantly higher on training assessments than those in the comparison group, demonstrating they acquired knowledge and skills from the online training. Further, military spouse mentors in the training group felt the training was useful and helped prepare them to mentor other military spouses. This pilot investigation demonstrated a brief, online peer mentor training may be used to train peer mentors.
