Functional but Inefficient Kinesthetic Motor Imagery in Adolescents with Autism Spectrum Disorder / Y. T. CHEN in Journal of Autism and Developmental Disorders, 48-3 (March 2018)

TSOU, Auteur ; H. L. CHEN, Auteur ; C. C. WONG, Auteur ; Y. T. FAN, Auteur ; C. T. WU, Auteur Année de publication : 2018 Article en page(s) : p.784-795 Langues : Anglais (eng) Mots-clés : Action representation Autism spectrum disorder Motor cognition Motor imagery Index. décimale : PER Périodiques Résumé : Whether action representation in individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is deficient remains controversial, as previous studies of action observation or imitation report conflicting results. Here we investigated the characteristics of action representation in adolescents with ASD through motor imagery (MI) using a hand rotation and an object rotation task. Comparable with the typically-developing group, the individuals with ASD were able to spontaneously use kinesthetic MI to perform the hand rotation task, as manifested by the significant biomechanical effects. However, the ASD group performed significantly slower only in the hand rotation task, but not in the object rotation task. The findings suggest that the adolescents with ASD showed inefficient but functional kinesthetic MI, implicating that their action representation might be preserved. Titre : The Actions and Feelings Questionnaire in Autism and Typically Developed Adults Type de document : Texte imprimé et/ou numérique Auteurs : J. H. G. WILLIAMS, Auteur ; Isobel M. CAMERON, Auteur Article en page(s) : p.3418-3430 Langues : Anglais (eng) Mots-clés : Autism Confirmatory factor analysis Empathy Motor cognition Questionnaire Sensorimotor Index. décimale : PER Périodiques Résumé : Impaired motor cognition may underpin empathy problems in autism. The actions and feelings questionnaire (AFQ), designed to examine individual differences in motor cognition, was completed fully by 1391 adults, of whom 326 reported a diagnosis of an autism spectrum condition (ASC). A confirmatory factor analysis supported a 3 factor model. The AFQ total and 'feelings' subscale scores correlated highly with the EQ and ROC curves were similar. Our findings suggest that individual differences in empathic traits are heavily accounted for by variance in mechanisms that serve sensorimotor learning (motor cognition) in relation to emotional states. The AFQ is a self-report tool that provides a valid indicator of autism status in adult populations. The objective of this study was to translate and cross-culturally adapt the AFQ into Dutch (AFQ-NL) and validate this new version in neurotypical and autistic populations. Translation and adaptation of the AFQ consisted of forward translation, synthesis, back translation, and expert review. In order to validate the AFQ-NL, we assessed convergent and divergent validity. We additionally assessed internal consistency using Cronbach's alpha. Validation and reliability outcomes were all satisfactory. The AFQ-NL is a valid adaptation that can be used for both autistic and neurotypical populations in the Netherlands.
