Titre : Brief Report: Emotional and Behavioral Problems Among Young Children with ASD: An Exploratory Study of ADOS E-Codes and Child Characteristics Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : Megan GALLIGAN LEDOUX, Auteur ; Michelle HEYMAN, Auteur ; Yasamin BOLOURIAN, Auteur ; Katherine STAVROPOULOS, Auteur ; Jan BLACHER, Auteur Article en page(s) : p.4597-4604 Langues : Anglais (eng) Mots-clés : Ados-2 Assessment Autism spectrum disorder Emotional and behavioral problems Index. décimale : PER Périodiques Résumé : Emotional and behavioral problems (EBPs), such as anxiety, overactivity, and aggression, can influence the diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder (ASD). The gold standard diagnostic tool for ASD, the Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule-Second Edition, includes three items ("E-codes") for EBPs that are frequently associated with ASD. Few empirical investigations have explored the use of E-codes. This study examined the relationship between E-codes and child characteristics (e.g., cognitive abilities, ASD symptom severity) in a sample of young children with ASD (N=233). Findings indicated that E-codes positively correlated with ASD symptom severity and negatively associated with IQ. Symptom severity also significantly accounted for the variance in EBPs. Implications for ASD assessment as well as future research are discussed. Titre : Child and parent outcomes following parent interventions for child emotional and behavioral problems in autism spectrum disorders: A systematic review and meta-analysis Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : Joanne TARVER, Auteur ; Melanie PALMER, Auteur ; Sophie WEBB, Auteur ; Stephen SCOTT, Auteur ; Vicky SLONIMS, Auteur ; Emily SIMONOFF, Auteur ; Tony CHARMAN, Auteur Article en page(s) : p.1630-1644 Langues : Anglais (eng) Mots-clés : IAMHealth autism spectrum disorder emotional and behavioral problems parent efficacy parent stress parent training Index. décimale : PER Périodiques Résumé : There is growing interest in the development of behavioral parent interventions targeting emotional and behavioral problems in children with autism spectrum disorders. Such interventions have potential to improve a number of child and parental well-being outcomes beyond disruptive child behavior. This systematic review and meta-analysis assesses evidence for the efficacy of behavioral parent interventions for disruptive and hyperactive child behavior in autism spectrum disorders, as well as parenting efficacy and stress. A total of 11 articles from nine randomized controlled trials were included. Sufficient data were available to calculate standardized mean difference and show favorable effects of behavioral parent interventions on parent-reported measures of child disruptive behavior (standardized mean difference = 0.67), hyperactivity (standardized mean difference = 0.31) and parent stress (standardized mean difference = 0.37); effects on parent efficacy are less clear (standardized mean difference = 0.39, p = 0.17). There were insufficient data to explore intervention effects on internalizing behavior in autism spectrum disorders, parenting behaviors, or observational and teacher-reported outcomes, providing important avenues for future research. This review adds to growing evidence of the efficacy of behavioral parent interventions for child behavior and parental well-being in autism spectrum disorders (Prospero: CRD42016033979). Caregivers were interviewed with the Childhood Autism Rating Scale and completed the Strength and Difficulties Questionnaire and the Parenting Stress Index Short Form. Results revealed that caregivers of children with mild/moderate autistic behavior problems perceived lower parenting stress than did those of children with no or severe problems. In addition, prosocial behaviors and conduct problems respectively predicted stress in the parent–child relationship and child-related stress. The findings can provide guidance in evaluations and interventions with a focus on mitigating parenting stress in caregivers of children with autism. Titre : The Association Between Emotional and Behavioral Problems in Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder and Psychological Distress in Their Parents: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : Isabel YORKE, Auteur ; Pippa WHITE, Auteur ; Amelia WESTON, Auteur ; Monica RAFLA, Auteur ; Tony CHARMAN, Auteur ; Emily SIMONOFF, Auteur Article en page(s) : p.3393-3415 Langues : Anglais (eng) Mots-clés : Additional psychopathology Autism spectrum disorder Emotional and behavioral problems Mental health Parenting stress Psychological distress Index. décimale : PER Périodiques Résumé : This review (Prospero Registration Number: CRD42017057915) aimed to systematically identify and summarize existing research on the relationship between additional emotional and behavioral problems (EBP) in children with autism, and parenting stress (PS) and mental health problems (MHP) in their parents. Sixty-seven studies met criteria for inclusion in the review, 61 of which were included in the meta-analysis. Pooled correlation coefficients were in the low to moderate range ([Formula: see text]). Some evidence for moderation by measurement characteristics was found. Narrative review of concurrent adjusted associations showed some evidence for shared relationships with other factors, most notably ASD severity and parent perception of own parenting. Longitudinal studies showed mixed evidence for bidirectional predictive relationships between child EBP and parent psychological distress variables. We examined the longitudinal relations among perinatal complications (i.e., prenatal maternal depression and cardiometabolic complications, preterm birth, and low birth weight), children’s negative affectivity (Mage = 2.76; SD = 2.32; range = 0.24–12.46 years), and children’s internalizing, externalizing, and total problems (Mage = 5.12; SD = 2.63; range = 1.50–16.85 years) in the Environmental influences on Child Health Outcomes (ECHO) program (N = 3070; 47% females). Results support child negative affectivity as a mechanism in the developmental pathway linking perinatal maternal depressive symptoms and preterm birth to future emotional and behavioral problems, underscoring the importance of early prevention and intervention efforts to promote psychological well-being of at-risk children.
