There has been relatively little research on the differences between males and females with an autistic spectrum disorder (ASD). This paper examines some of the data on 130 individuals (98 males and 32 females) referred to a clinic in the West Midlands and compares information on the age when a difficulty was first recognised by parents, age at diagnosis, main presenting problems and co-morbidity. The clinic specialises in the referrals of complex and atypical children and 50 may not be representative of the ASD population overall, but it raises some interesting issues that warrant further study by ail those involved in the diagnostic assessment of children with ASD. It is a concern that a high percentage of these children are on medication (over 50 per cent) which is also an indication that these children have more complex needs than the general ASD population. Studies on the short- and long-term use and benefits of medication and possible side effects are also needed.
