Christopher Dyer has worked in the field of autism for over thirty years, being teacher-in-charge of one of the first units for children with autism in the UK, then an adviser and latterly an Ofsted inspector. In his paper he argues that it is the difficulties which children with AS experience in language that interfere with their development of communication and that, on this basis, some of the strategies which aim tom develop communication are unlikely to succeed. Instead, he describes an intervention designed to develop inner languege which adults might use with children with ASD to enhance their communicative skills. |
