Children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) often present with a number of characteristics that can negatively impact nutrition status. Restrictive and repetitive eating patterns can reduce dietary variety and limit intake of some nutrients, particularly vitamin D and calcium. GI symptoms and food allergies are also common and may contribute to further dietary restriction. Increased prevalence of overweight and obesity in children with ASD can complicate the future health of the child. The registered dietitian nutritionist (RDN) can be an important resource for families as they navigate the complexities associated with dietary restriction. An in-depth nutrition assessment by the RDN can provide valuable information regarding the preferences of the child and how best to implement changes. The RDN also plays an influential role in the interdisciplinary team through reducing the risk of nutritional deficiencies by working with families to alter dietary intake to meet the needs of each child individually. |
