Résumé : |
Oral health is an integral component of overall systemic health, especially, for special healthcare needs populations. Clients with ASD are included in the special healthcare needs population based on the modification of care that needs to be considered. The interdisciplinary team approach maximizes health outcomes in individuals with ASD. Dental hygienists are essential members of the interdisciplinary team based on their roles and responsibilities in relation to patient-centered care. Clients with ASD experience oral diseases common to all populations and oral conditions specific to ASD characteristics. These characteristics challenge achieving oral health and are unique to each individual. Therefore, a patient-centered approach is paramount for optimal oral hygiene practices at home and during professional oral care appointments. Strategies to address ASD characteristics are documented in the literature, and implementation of multiple strategies creates a positive environment based on each individual’s needs. |
