The author is a teacher who has always loved music and singing. An online questionnaire was created for staff working within UK special schools to give their views on the value of singing for students with Specific Learning Disabilities (SLD) and Profound and Multiple Learning Difficulties (PMLD). There is relatively little guidance or research on how singing might be used with these learners and what the potential benefits and barriers might be. Meeting the different needs of individuals in group sessions can be a challenge, yet some point to the sense of community that can develop. More case studies are needed to show how staff conduct singing for learners with SLD and PMLD and ways developed to ascertain their response to these. |
