Résumé : |
Mindfulness-based interventions (MBIs) are emerging as an empirically supported treatment for adults with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). There is evidence supporting the feasibility, acceptability, and efficacy of MBIs for improving co-occurring psychiatric symptoms and quality of life in samples of adults with ASD. However, the current research consists of mostly pilot trials and a few randomized controlled trials (RCTs), posing an outstanding need for large-scale effectiveness trials. MBIs may improve outcomes in ASD due to direct changes in emotion regulation impairment, which underlies many high-impact problems such as suicidality, anxiety, and depression in autism. Adults with ASD have unique needs that often pose clinical challenges that require small adjustments and additional supports during mindfulness delivery. As such, this chapter provides a resource to current and future clinicians serving adults with ASD. Mindfulness, meditations, and MBIs as a psychotherapy approach are introduced and followed by a summary of empirical evidence supporting MBIs in samples of adults with ASD. Common clinical delivery challenges and strategies are described in the context of a case study for clinicians interested in using MBIs with adults with ASD. |
