Résumé : |
Although individuals with an autism spectrum disorder (ASD) are no more likely to offend than individuals without ASD, some individuals in specific circumstances can be vulnerable to engaging in law-breaking behavior. Offence behaviors can take many forms and are often directly linked to the associated features of ASD such as thinking styles, perspective-taking difficulties, emotional regulation difficulties, social naivete, and sensory-processing issues. Despite individuals with ASD representing a relatively small proportion of offenders within the criminal justice system, they are likely to be overrepresented relative to the general prevalence in the population, and they present as a diverse group with difficulties and needs that pose a challenge for mainstream services. Examining published research supplemented with clinical experience, this chapter reviews the provision of offence-focused interventions for adults with ASD. Key issues covered include the therapeutic adaptations to consider, potential factors influencing therapeutic engagement, and the role of organizational awareness of ASD. |
