| Résumé : |
Background This study investigated the neurocognitive profile of individuals with self-reported autism within a massive cohort of 50,002 university students and examined the propensity for analytic reasoning and introducing relevant multivariate controls. Methods Participants completed the Cognitive Reflection Test (CRT) alongside measures of self-reported autism and ADHD status, psychological distress, and challenges with impulse control. Results The data highlighted a substantial Autism-ADHD co-occurrence rate of 56.2%, and higher self-reported autism prevalence among females (2.3%) than males (1.8%). After adjusting for demographic factors and psychological co-occurring conditions through multivariate regression, the results revealed an interaction between autism and sex showing that a higher performance of autistic individuals on CRT was observed among females, while there was no significant difference among males. While the observed effect size is modest, these findings provide evidence of a distinct cognitive style oriented toward logical, rule-based processing in female autistic populations attending higher education. Conclusion These results emphasize the importance of considering cognitive diversity, sex and the interplay of emotional and executive factors when assessing the academic and intellectual potential of autistic students. |
