Titre : Autism and Obesity: Prevalence, Molecular Basis and Potential Therapies Type de document : Texte imprimé et/ou numérique Auteurs : Jyoti Rajan SHARMA, Auteur ; Zainunisha ARIEFF, Auteur ; Sunil SAGAR, Auteur ; Mandeep KAUR, Auteur Année de publication : 2012 Article en page(s) : 13 p. Langues : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : PER Périodiques Résumé : Studies in the past have suggested that autistic children are at higher risk of developing obesity as compared to the general population. Not enough research has been done to examine the co-existence of obesity in children with autism spectrum disorders. Although studies have attempted to define the prevalence of obesity in autism, none of these studies have explained the molecular basis of this overlap. In this review, we summarize not only the previous investigations related to autism and obesity but also present a systematic biology oriented pathway based analysis. We hypothesize that defining the common molecular gene targets as well as shared pathways between autism and obesity could be the key to develop therapies for individuals who present phenotype of autism as well as obesity. HAO, Auteur ; Steve AN XUE, Auteur ; Janet Cheng Yan KI, Auteur ; Luc DE SCHEPPER, Auteur Année de publication : 2012 Article en page(s) : 16 p. Langues : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : PER Périodiques Résumé : This study was a retrospective survey investigating the association between prenatal stress and risk factors of Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) in a Chinese population. Twenty-eight mothers of children diagnosed with ASD, and thirty-eight mothers of children with no diagnoses of neurodevelopmental diseases were interviewed. The survey analyzed the incidence and intensity of prenatal stress, birth conditions and developmental problems of children, maternal health conditions, and the participants' coping strategies towards prenatal stress. Higher overall prenatal stress intensity and incidence were found to be experienced by mothers of ASD children. Mothers with ASD children also showed higher incidence of premature deliveries, birth complications, health problems, maternal illnesses, advanced maternal age, and other developmental problems with their children.
