Dog phobia s very common in people on the autism spectrum, 50 this case study addresses an important topic on which little research has been conducted. This carefully implemented and very successful desensitisation programme highlights a number of important considerations when planning a therapeutic programme, if it is to succeed. There is a need for ongoing staff involvement and commitment, often over a long period of time. The individual also needs to understand the purpose of the intervention and his/her options and rights re participation. It is also vital to have an appreciation of the complexity of the problem when working with someone on the autism spectrum with a learning disability. There is also a need to introduce positive associations and strategies to overcome anxiety at the same time as implementing the desensitisation element. In effect, this paper describes a very holistic approach to overcoming a phobia with the aim of enhancing an individual’s quality of life. |
