Neurobiology, diagnosis and treatment in autism / Daria RIVA
Titre : Neurobiology, diagnosis and treatment in autism : An update Type de document : Texte imprimé et/ou numérique Auteurs : Daria RIVA, Directeur de publication ; Sara BULGHERONI, Directeur de publication ; Michele ZAPPELLA, Directeur de publication Editeur : Montrouge [France] : John Libbey Eurotext Année de publication : 2013 Collection : Mariani Foundation paediatric neurology series, ISSN 0969-0301 num. 26 Importance : 229 p. Présentation : ill. Format : 17,5cm x 25cm x 1,5cm ISBN/ISSN/EAN : 978-2-7420-0836-0 Note générale : Bibliogr. Langues : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : SCI-D SCI-D - Neurosciences Résumé : This volume provides advances in current knowledge on the diagnosis, neurobiology, pharmacologic therapy, and rehabilitation methods in autism, suggesting a potential influence on professional practice and enabling an up-to-date approach to effective diagnosis and treatment. Autism is an extremely complex neurodevelopmental disorder that is expressed in a spectrum of phenotypes and is characterized by impaired reciprocal social communication and stereotyped patterns of interests and activities. Its aetiopathogenesis remains poorly understood. It has become clear that causative genes interact with environmental factors in generating the disorder, but the molecular and pathogenic mechanisms causing the expression of the resulting mutations are not at all obvious. The candidate genes implicate an involvement of numerous brain regions and a concomitant malfunctioning of neurotransmitter, immunologic, and other mechanisms. These topics are reviewed in different presentations. Additionally, since the disorder lasts over the lifetime, other chapters focus on early intervention, discussing the most incisive rehabilitation models in their original formulation and the results achieved with the same or similar protocols in Italian centres. Finally, strong attention is paid to the psychopharmacologic options for the condition of autism per se and for its associated, very frequent, comorbidities. Titre : Neuronal and Synaptic Dysfunction in Autism Spectrum Disorder and Intellectual Disability Type de document : Texte imprimé et/ou numérique Auteurs : Carlo SALA, Directeur de publication ; Chiara VERPELLI, Directeur de publication Editeur : Issy les Moulineaux [France] : Academic Press Année de publication : 2016 Importance : 379 p. Présentation : ill. Format : 22cm x 28cm x 2,5cm ISBN/ISSN/EAN : 978-0-12-800109-7 Note générale : Bibliogr., Index Langues : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : SCI-D SCI-D - Neurosciences Résumé : Neuronal and Synaptic Dysfunction in Autism Spectrum Disorder and Intellectual Disability provides the latest information on Autism spectrum disorders (ASDs), the lifelong neurodevelopmental disorders that present in early childhood and affect how individuals communicate and relate to others and their surroundings.
In addition, three quarters of ASD patients also manifest severe intellectual disability. Though certain genes have been implicated, ASDs remain largely a mystery, and research looking into causes and cellular deficits are crucial for better understanding of neurodevelopmental disorders.
Despite the prevalence and insidious nature of this disorder, this book remains to be an extensive resource of information and background on the state of current research in the field.
The book serves as a reference for this purpose, and discusses the crucial role synaptic activity plays in proper brain function. In addition, the volume discusses the neurodevelopmental synaptopathies and serves as a resource for scientists and clinicians in all biomedical science specialties. This research has been crucial for recent studies that have provided a rationale for the development of pharmacological agents able to counteract functional synaptic anomalies and potentially ameliorate some ASD symptoms.
- Introduces the genetic and non-genetic causes of autism and associated intellectual disabilities
- Describes the genes implicated in autistic spectrum disorders and their function
- Considers major individual genetic causes of autism, Rett syndrome, Fragile X syndrome, and other autism spectrum disorders, as well as their classification as synaptopathies
- Presents a thorough discussion of the clinical aspects of multiple neurodevelopmental disorders and the experimental models that exist to study their pathophysiology in vitro and in vivo, including animal models and patient-derived stem cell culture.
