Margo Sharp is a Principal Speech and Language Therapist working at Birmingham Children’s Hospital. In this paper, they address the difficulties faced by individuals on the autism spectrum when confronted by those working in the criminal justice system (CJS). They describe the setting-up of a forum to address these issues giving its main aims and stating some of the objectives achieved to date. These include the introduction of an ‘attention card’ that individuals can carry to alert CJS professionals to their support needs. The paper highlights the need for ongoing research in this field, including the need to evaluate the impact of training on raising awareness of the needs of this population.
