Titre : Parental Perspectives of Communication about Sexuality in Families of Children with Autism Spectrum Disorders Type de document : Texte imprimé et/ou numérique Auteurs : Michelle S. BALLAN, Auteur Année de publication : 2012 Article en page(s) : p.676-684 Langues : Anglais (eng) Mots-clés : Sexuality Parent communication Autism spectrum disorders Index. décimale : PER Périodiques Résumé : To explore the content of communication about sexuality between parents and children with autism spectrum disorders, semi-structured interviews were conducted with 18 parents of children ages 6–13. Content analysis and ethnographic summary were used to interpret the data. Findings suggest that parent’s perceptions of a child’s behaviors and comprehension are associated with the likelihood that communication occurs. However, parents recognize the risks their children experience, with the greatest fears being sexual victimization and misperceptions related to the intent of their child’s behaviors. This study provides information on the nature of communication about sexuality in families of children with autism spectrum disorders and can help tailor interventions aimed at assisting parents to communicate sexuality information effectively. Titre : Parental Perspectives of Students With Autism Spectrum Disorders Transitioning From Primary to Secondary School in the United Kingdom Type de document : Texte imprimé et/ou numérique Auteurs : Gayle Victoria DILLON, Auteur ; Jean D.M. UNDERWOOD, Auteur Année de publication : 2012 Article en page(s) : p.111-121 Langues : Anglais (eng) Mots-clés : autism spectrum disorders transition to secondary school qualitative Index. décimale : PER Périodiques Résumé : Transferring from mainstream primary to secondary school can be especially problematic for children with an autism spectrum disorder. Two groups of parents (nine pretransition and six posttransition parents) contributed to this 15-month-long study. Perceptions of the pretransition group were captured through focus groups and in-depth interviews at three critical times: before transition, one term in, and after a full year of secondary schooling. The posttransition group provided retrospective perceptions. The data, coded using a grounded theory approach, confirmed that transition was problematic in the first year, although there were signs of integration by the second year of secondary school. The establishment of friendship groups and peer acceptance appeared to be the key criteria for successful transition. MEINDL, Auteur ; Gilbert R. PARRA, Auteur ; Pam COGDAL, Auteur ; Kevin POWELL, Auteur Année de publication : 2012 Article en page(s) : p.1186-1193 Langues : Anglais (eng) Mots-clés : Autism spectrum disorder Parents Posttraumatic stress Index. décimale : PER Périodiques Résumé : Posttraumatic stress symptoms (PTSS) are well documented in parents of children diagnosed with chronic disabilities and life-threatening illnesses. The occurrence of PTSS in parents of children with autism spectrum disorders (autism) has not been directly linked but instead only mentioned without data supporting the claim. This research was a retrospective study examining the occurrence of PTSS in parents of children with autism. The instruments used included in the survey were the Impact of Events Scale-Revised (IES-R) and the LA Symptom Checklist (LASC). The IES-R was used for group membership (PTSS or not) and the LASC was used to determine if further psychosocial ailments were common to one group over the other. The findings validate the existence of PTSS in a subpopulation (20%) of parents. These findings document a need to recognize the degree of psychological impact/distress in parents resulting from their child being diagnosed with autism. Awareness of parental PTSS, will help ensure the necessary steps are taken to see that the parents/child's caretakers are healthy and that the child's access to treatment is not compromised due to parental stress.
