Methods We tested the association between parent-reported childhood (age 7?years) autistic and ADHD (i.e. hyperactivity/impulsivity, inattention) traits and self-reported adolescent (age 13) eating behaviours in a large population-representative prospective cohort (N?=?7,572; Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children). We performed multi-group longitudinal analysis stratified by sex to understand whether sex moderates' associations between neurodevelopmental traits and adolescent eating behaviours. Mediation models tested the extent to which observed associations were driven by mid-childhood (age 10) anxiety symptoms. All analyses were adjusted for child sex, child ethnicity, maternal education levels and maternal age at birth. Results Individuals who had higher childhood autistic traits were more likely to report emotional/restrained (b?=?0.59, 95% CI [0.29, 0.88], p?.001, B?=?0.07) and externally driven (b?=?0.17, 95% CI [0.05, 0.28], p?.01, B?=?0.06) eating behaviours during adolescence. Additionally, individuals with higher childhood inattention traits were more likely to report externally driven eating behaviours (b?=?0.10, 95% CI [0.03, 0.19], p?=?.02, B?=?0.05). No sex differences were identified in the associations. Mediation models suggested a significant indirect effect of anxiety for the association between autistic traits and emotional/restrained eating (b?=?0.08, bootstrapped 95% CIs [0.02, 0.13]). Conclusions Autistic and ADHD traits in childhood may share some eating behaviour phenotypes in adolescence (externally driven eating), whereas others are specific to autism (emotional/restrained eating). We present evidence for the role of anxiety in underpinning the association between autistic traits and emotional/restrained eating behaviours, suggesting an important potential intervention target. Unclear is whether victimisation by peers increases the risk of borderline personality symptoms. Method: The Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children (ALSPAC) prospective, longitudinal observation study of 6050 mothers and their children. Child bullying was measured by self-report and mother and teacher report between 4 and 10 years. Family adversity was assessed from pregnancy to 4 years; parenting behaviours from 2 to 7 years, sexual abuse from 1.5 to 9 years, and IQ and DSM-IV axis I diagnoses at 7 to 8 years. Trained psychologists interviewed children at 11.8 years to ascertain DSM-IV BPD symptoms (five or more). Results: Accounting for known confounders, victims of peer bullying had an increased risk of BPD symptoms according to self-report (OR, 2.82; 95% CI, 2.13–3.72); mother report (OR, 2.43; 95% CI, 1.86–3.16); and teacher report (OR, 1.95; 95% CI, 1.34–2.83). Children who reported being chronically bullied (OR, 5.44; 95% CI, 3.86–7.66) or experienced combined relational and overt victimisation (OR, 7.10; 95% CI, 4.79–10.51) had highly increased odds of developing BPD symptoms. Children exposed to chronic victimisation according to mother report were also at heightened risk of developing BPD symptoms (OR, 3.24; 95% CI, 2.24–4.68). Conclusions: Intentional harm inflicted by peers is a precursor or marker on the trajectory towards the development of BPD symptoms in childhood. Clinicians should be adequately trained to deal with, and ask users of mental health services routinely about, adverse experiences with peers. Depression measures were combined, deriving an outcome of major depressive disorder (MDD) in adolescence. Logistic regression examined the association between childhood neurodevelopmental difficulties and adolescent MDD, controlling for gender. Path analysis estimated the proportion of this association explained by irritability. Analyses were repeated for individual neurodevelopmental problems. RESULTS: Childhood neurodevelopmental difficulties were associated with adolescent MDD (OR = 2.11, 95% CI = 1.24, 3.60, p = .006). Childhood irritability statistically accounted for 42% of this association. On examining each neurodevelopmental difficulty separately, autistic, communication and ADHD problems were each associated with depression, with irritability explaining 29%-51% of these links. CONCLUSIONS: Childhood irritability appears to be a key contributor to the link between childhood neurodevelopmental difficulties and adolescent MDD. High rates of irritability in children with autistic and ADHD difficulties may explain elevated rates of depression in the neurodevelopmental group.
