The Incredible Years® parent training intervention for Latino children on the autism spectrum / Irina ZAMORA in Good Autism Practice - GAP, 17-1 (May 2016)
[article]
Titre : The Incredible Years® parent training intervention for Latino children on the autism spectrum Type de document : Texte imprimé et/ou numérique Auteurs : Irina ZAMORA, Auteur ; Eliza K HARLEY, Auteur ; Bradley O HUDSON, Auteur Année de publication : 2016 Article en page(s) : p.6-14 Langues : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : PER Périodiques Résumé : Irina Zamora is a Psychologist and Assistant Professor of Clinical Pediatrics at the USC University Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities (UCEDD) in Las Angeles, California. This is the first of two papers on the Incredible Years parent training intervention in this issue of the Good Autism Practice Journal. Here, the authors explore the use of this intervention in a community setting, and in a different culture — the Latino culture. Many interventions are designed and piloted in a controlled laboratory setting, and do not take into account the impact of culture and language. This paper is a good example of the work involved in adapting interventions ta the needs of those receiving them, and highlights some important points to bear in mmd when supporting people from other cultures. This is also relevant to us in the United Kingdom, where many cultures live close together. Different communities have different family dynamics, different ways of communication, and may not be receptive ta interventions and advice delivered by people outside of their community. This paper reminds us to be mindful of the background of those we support, and to find ways of reaching communities that may not be getting the support they need. The editors are interested in other submissions on this topic, particularly from groups working in different communities in the UK. Their study is the second in our journal on the Incredible Years programme for parents of children on the autism spectrum. The Incredible Years programme was not originally designed for parents of children with autism, but has recently been adapted. This pilot study explores the acceptability and feasibility of the programme in the UK. When interventions are designed and tested in other countries (in the US in this case), it is important to test how it works in the UK, as we have a different school and healthcare system. The promising results in this small pilot study suggest that larger research studies are now needed. Permalink : https://www.cra-rhone-alpes.org/cid/opac_css/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=289

[article]
Titre : Children on the autism spectrum: a study of social interactions in school Type de document : Texte imprimé et/ou numérique Auteurs : Ana Luisa FERNANDES PEREIRA DA SILVA, Auteur ; Preciosa FERNANDES, Auteur Année de publication : 2016 Article en page(s) : p.30-39 Langues : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : PER Périodiques Résumé : Ana Luisa Fernandes Pereira da Silva is a speech therapist and Preciosa Fernandes is a professor of Psychology in Portugal. In this paper, the authors explored how children with autism interact with their neurotypical peers in a school setting, what features might make this more difficult and how the experience can be improved. They found that in group settings, children with autism sometimes have difficulties with conversation, maintaining social relationships and participating in symbolic play. The authors showed that if their neurotypical peers were accepting and encouraging, the children with autism were more likely to be included in activities. This led to children on the autism spectrum becoming more comfortable in these settings and spending more time in these groups later on. The authors advocate helping neurotypical children understand the features of autism, 50 that they can be more accepting in their play. This is a small study, but it highlights some important factors which can lead to a better experience in school for children with autism. In this paper they discuss the potential benefits of using scripts and semantic mapping to facilitate communication and conversation between individuals with autism and their peers or adults. They explore the research base for each method and illustrate the type of work they have done with individual children and young people. They conclude that further research is required as there is far more written about the use of semantic mapping in helping written skills, than exists for conversational skills. In this paper she considers some of the voices and views within the autistic population and how this voice has grown with the publication of autobiographies and the use of the Internet. She makes the point that perspectives differ within the autism spectrum and that more needs to be done to ascertain the views of those who are less able to communicate or who can not access the Internet. Readers can consider how they currently involve autistic individuals in designing, planning and implementing provision, services and research and how their involvement has changed their practice.
