High profile cases reported in the media may have given an impression that there is an association between Asperger's syndrome and the crimninal justice system. Is this association real or imagined and what does the available evidence tell us? This paper attempts to seek out and draw together what evidence exists from across the world by looking specifically at forensic, experimental, prevalence and community-based studies. It suggests why those with ASD might be involved or suspected of an offence and makes recommandations as to how they might be understood and supported by the police and the criminal justice system. A survey methodology that utilised quantitative data collection was employed to investigate the prevalence of offending behaviour amongst adults with Asperger Syndrome in a large geographical area of South Wales, UK; qualitative interviews were then conducted with a sub-sample of those identified. A small number of participants meeting the study criteria were identified. For those who had offended, their experience of the criminal justice system was essentially negative. Possible implications of the results were discussed.
