Background Examinations of measurement invariance on the ADOS-2 have demonstrated instrumental bias and differential performance for males. This is unsurprising, considering the female phenotype for autism measures was rarely represented in original samples. However, an examination of which items on the ADOS-2 females are more likely to endorse and are most representative of autistic difficulties for females has not been examined. Methods Using NDAR, a novel latent space items response model (LSIRM, Jeon et al., 2021) was employed to identify patterns in responses to visualize sex differences in the latent structure of the ADOS-2, representing several different phenotypic profiles. Results Overall, the scores for females were lower and clustered around social communicative difficulties (SCD). Males exhibited several distinct phenotypic profiles. Conclusion These findings allow for visualization of how items performs via clusters of individuals’ endorsement ability. These findings potentially drive specific item-level examinations and suggest changed weighting and scoring mechanisms. |
