Titre : Association between rates of premature delivery and intra-uterine growth retardation Type de document : Texte imprimé et/ou numérique Auteurs : P. S. SPIERS, Auteur ; S. WACHOLDER, Auteur Année de publication : 1982 Article en page(s) : p.808-816 Langues : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : PER Périodiques Résumé : It has been suggested that there is a positive epidemiological correlation between the rates of premature delivery and intra-uterine growth retardation. This was tested across three series of live births, cross-classified according to gravidity and mother's age in two states, North Carolina (caucasians and blacks), and Washington (caucasians only) in the years 1970-74 and 1968-77, respectively. Premature-delivery rate was defined as the percentage of all births of known gestational age born before 37 weeks, and a surrogate measure of the growth-retardation rate as the percentage of all births weighing less than 2500g at term (less than or equal to 40 weeks). The correlations between the two rates for caucasian live births in North Carolina and Washington were found to be +0.74 and +0.73 respectively (p less than 0.0005 in each instance). The correlation coefficient (+0.12 for black live births in North Carolina was not significant. The correlation observed among caucasian births suggest that for growth-retarded fetuses, the risk of subsequent premature delivery is abnormally high. SPIERS in Developmental Medicine & Child Neurology, 24-1 (February 1982)

Titre : Spastic diplegia and the significance of mothers'previous reproductive loss Type de document : Texte imprimé et/ou numérique Auteurs : P. S. SPIERS, Auteur ; Nora DAVIS, Auteur Année de publication : 1982 Article en page(s) : p.20-29 Langues : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : PER Périodiques Résumé : In order to explore the relationship between spastic diplegia and mothers' previous reproductive loss, 119 cases of spastic diplegia born between 1953 and 1977 were compared with two series of controls. One control group comprised a random sample of all births, the other a random sample of births matched for birthweight and length of gestation. A demonstrable difference in previous reproductive histories was found between mothers of cases of spastic diplegia and mothers of the first series of controls, but there was no such difference between mothers of cases and mothers of the second series. This suggests that the reproductive histories of mothers of cases of spastic diplegia are not unique, and that their unusual number of reproductive losses is related to the child's associated fetal growth-retardation and not to the presence of diplegia.
