Résumé : |
In this paper, the author, who works as a clinical psychologist, considers the effects of ageing on autistic adults and how their specific needs might be addressed. The physical and mental health of all people generally deteriorate with age and there are factors which exacerbate certain conditions. Having regular physical exercise, good nutrition, gainful employment and meaningful social contacts, and seeking advice when symptoms appear, are all protective factors for some disorders and diseases. Some autistic adults do not have the same means or opportunities that are enjoyed by the general population which puts them at increased risk. It is important then that services are aware of the issues faced and take steps to address these so that their physical and mental health is as good as it can be in older age. The Editor welcomes papers from others on this topic. |
