This paper reports on a study completed as part of her Masters degree. Helen was aware that when children do not make eye contact with others, be they parents, staff or children, then others can feel less connected and interactions may decrease and the quality of the relationship and opportunities for learning can be reduced. This study sought to examine the nature of the relatedness between teaching assistants (TAs) and young children with autism and its relationship to eye contact, and to ascertain whether training and a specific intervention can enhance this relationship.
