Dietary Interventions in Autism Spectrum Disorders / Kenneth J. AITKEN
Titre : Dietary Interventions in Autism Spectrum Disorders : Why They Work When They Do, Why They Don't When They Don't Type de document : Texte imprimé et/ou numérique Auteurs : Kenneth J. AITKEN, Auteur Editeur : Londres [Angleterre] : Jessica Kingsley Publishers Année de publication : 2009 Importance : 272 p. Format : 24,2cm x 16cm x 2,5cm ISBN/ISSN/EAN : 978-1-84310-939-6 Note générale : Bibliogr., Index Langues : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : VIE-B VIE-B - Vie Quotidienne - Alimentation Résumé : 'Often overlooked by professionals, dietary interventions in autistic spectrum disorders can be very helpful and more importantly, are something that parents and carers can actually do to help the children. However, many different diets have been suggested and parents/carers can waste time and money trying the wrong diet for their particular child. Dr Aitken's book gives much-needed practical advice on matching the diet to the child and clear explanations about the biochemical background involved. Essential reading for anyone caring for a child with ASD.'
- Dr Rosemary Waring, University of Birmingham
'Given the increased interest in the relationship between diet and autism spectrum conditions, this is a timely publication which is both thorough and balanced in content. Parents and professionals alike will find this book of use by virtue of Ken's meticulous reviews of current scientific evidence for a variety of diets combined with practical advice on the application of such interventions.'
- Dr. Paul Whiteley, Autism Research Unit
'Dr. Aitken provides a timely synthesis of diet interventions in autistic spectrum disorders set within a framework of historical and political references. This informative work offers invaluable assistance to the wider clinical team, further enabling effective support and guidance to the ASD community in its quest for a healthy future.'
- Rosemary Kessick, former CEO of AiA (Allergy Induced Autism
Following the increasing amount of scientific research relating to autism, various dietary approaches are being advocated to help those with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASDs). This book provides an introduction to the clinical conditions that can cause autistic behaviour and what can be done to significantly improve many of them.
The book explores the known genetic conditions linked to autism and describes various dietary interventions. For each approach, the author explores the potential benefits; evidence for and against the diet; and information, where available, on relevant publications, web resources and support groups. The author also looks at the Simple Restriction Diet (SRD) in detail, describing how to implement this approach and how to evaluate its effects.
This book will be a valuable resource for families, individuals and professionals wishing to understand and explore the possibilities of dietary interventions and the benefits they can have for those on the autism spectrum.Permalink : https://www.cra-rhone-alpes.org/cid/opac_css/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=720 Dietary Interventions in Autism Spectrum Disorders : Why They Work When They Do, Why They Don't When They Don't [Texte imprimé et/ou numérique] / Kenneth J. Titre : Elijah's Cup : A Family's Journey into the Community and Culture of High-functioning Autism and Asperger's Syndrome Type de document : Texte imprimé et/ou numérique Auteurs : Valérie PARADIZ, Auteur Mention d'édition : Revised edition Editeur : Londres [Angleterre] : Jessica Kingsley Publishers Année de publication : 2005 Importance : 235 p. Format : 15,5cm x 23,2cm x 1,4cm ISBN/ISSN/EAN : 978-1-84310-802-3 Note générale : Index Langues : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : ASP-I ASP-I - Asperger - Vie Familiale Résumé : This provocative and pioneering book is both a refreshing exploration of the history of autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) and a powerful story of the author's own struggle with her son Elijah's Asperger's Syndrome.
From her first inklings of Elijah's difference to her discovery of a whole spectrum of another way of life that includes everything from civil rights organizations for autistics to Asperger artists, Valerie Paradiz describes how she decided to cross what she calls 'cultural boundaries' to overcome her fears about her son's condition. Her inspiring narrative offers compelling insights into daily life with Elijah's Asperger's syndrome and her own 'shadow syndrome', which affects many family members of autistics. It is also a celebration of the idiosyncratic beauty of the Asperger mind and the sense of mutual support and self-respect in the ASD community.
This revised edition includes a contribution from Elijah and a new chapter that brings the story up-to-date: the author successfully sets up a specialist educational unit for Asperger pupils, Elijah experiences his first two years of school, and the author's dawning recognition of her own Asperger's Syndrome leads to major life changes.
Elijah's Cup offers moving and insightful observations as well as factual information for parents and anyone working with people with ASDs. – Dicte, a 7-year-old with infantile autism
Visual support aids can be highly effective tools for increasing levels of communication and independence in children with autism, who often have difficulty interpreting spoken language and non-verbal facial expressions.
Fully illustrated with inspiring examples, Everyday Education provides a wealth of ideas for creating visual support aids for children on the autism spectrum. Photographs and clear, practical explanations describe how these tools can be arranged helpfully around the home for the child to use. The authors describe how visual support aids can be used in all kinds of everyday situations, from labelling – for example, sticking a picture of a dinner plate with a knife and fork to the chair in which the child sits at meal times – to putting together a pictorial activities schedule for the child to refer to.
This fun and encouraging book will be a valuable source of ideas for parents of children with autism and professionals working with them.
Pernille Dyrbjerg is the mother of Dicte, who has been diagnosed with infantile autism. She is a teacher at a specialist school for autistic children in the Copenhagen area.
Maria Vedel is a hearing and speech therapist. She has worked for a number of years as an adviser for parents with autistic children and with professionals who work with autistic children.Permalink : https://www.cra-rhone-alpes.org/cid/opac_css/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=222 Everyday Education : Visual Support for Children with Autism [Texte imprimé et/ou numérique] / Pernille DYRBJERG, Auteur ; Maria VEDEL, Auteur ; Lennart PEDERSEN, Préfacier, etc. . - Londres [Angleterre] : Jessica Kingsley Publishers, 2007 . - 128 p. : ill. ; 17,7cm x 25,3cm x 1,2cm.
