Understanding Autism / Chloe SILVERMAN
Titre : Understanding Autism : Parents, Doctors, and the History of a Disorder Type de document : Texte imprimé et/ou numérique Auteurs : Chloe SILVERMAN, Auteur Editeur : Princeton NJ [Etats-Unis] : Princeton University Press Année de publication : 2011 Importance : 340 p. Format : 16cm x 24cm x 3cm ISBN/ISSN/EAN : 978-0-691-15046-8 Note générale : Bibliogr., Index Langues : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : AUT-B AUT-B - L'Autisme - Ouvrages généraux et scientifiques Résumé :
Autism has attracted a great deal of attention in recent years, thanks to dramatically increasing rates of diagnosis, extensive organizational mobilization, journalistic coverage, biomedical research, and clinical innovation. Understanding Autism, a social history of the expanding diagnostic category of this contested illness, takes a close look at the role of emotion--specifically, of parental love--in the intense and passionate work of biomedical communities investigating autism.
Chloe Silverman tracks developments in autism theory and practice over the past half-century and shows how an understanding of autism has been constituted and stabilized through vital efforts of schools, gene banks, professional associations, government committees, parent networks, and treatment conferences. She examines the love and labor of parents, who play a role in developing--in conjunction with medical experts--new forms of treatment and therapy for their children. While biomedical knowledge is dispersed through an emotionally neutral, technical language that separates experts from laypeople, parental advocacy and activism call these distinctions into question. Silverman reveals how parental care has been a constant driver in the volatile field of autism research and treatment, and has served as an inspiration for scientific change.
Recognizing the importance of parental knowledge and observations in treating autism, this book reveals that effective responses to the disorder demonstrate the mutual interdependence of love and science.
Chloe Silverman is an assistant professor in the Science, Technology, and Society Program at Pennsylvania State University. High-Functioning Individuals with Autism SCHOPLER, Eric Understanding Executive Function Challenges in Autism Spectrum Disorder / Gregory L. WALLACE ; Laura Gutermuth ANTHONY ; Lauren KENWORTHY
Titre : Understanding Executive Function Challenges in Autism Spectrum Disorder Type de document : Texte imprimé et/ou numérique Auteurs : Gregory L. WALLACE, Auteur ; Laura Gutermuth ANTHONY, Auteur ; Lauren KENWORTHY, Auteur Année de publication : 2020 Importance : p.305-325 Langues : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : AUT-B AUT-B - L'Autisme - Ouvrages généraux et scientifiques Résumé : The construct of executive function (EF) has been referred to as an ?umbrella? term for a collection of higher order cognitive processes that guide and manage goal-directed behavior and problem solving. EF impairments are common in autism spectrum disorder (ASD). EF is centrally related to characteristics of ASD and real-world outcomes such as adaptive behavior and quality of life. This chapter describes the profile of EF impairment in ASD and reviews its development across the lifespan and how it affects various aspects of daily functioning (social skills, adaptive behavior, co-occurring psychiatric conditions). The chapter also addresses the challenges assessing of EF and describes promising interventions to promote executive skills in ASD.
