Titre : How To Be Yourself in a World That's Different : An Asperger's Syndrome Study Guide for Adolescents Type de document : Texte imprimé et/ou numérique Auteurs : Yuko YOSHIDA, Auteur ; Lorna WING, Préfacier, etc. ; Esther SANDERS, Traducteur Editeur : Londres [Angleterre] : Jessica Kingsley Publishers Année de publication : 2006 Importance : 112 p. Présentation : ill. Format : 13,5cm x 21,5cm x 0,7cm ISBN/ISSN/EAN : 978-1-84310-504-6 Note générale : Bibliogr. Langues : Anglais (eng) Langues originales : Japonais (jpn) Index. décimale : ASP-H ASP-H - Asperger - Enfants Adolescents Résumé : How to Be Yourself in a World That's Different is an accessible guide to Asperger's Syndrome (AS) written for young readers who have been diagnosed with AS and other autism spectrum conditions.
The book features a clear explanation of the condition, including symptoms that are common to people on the autism spectrum, such as a hypersensitivity to touch and difficulties with balance and coordination. The characteristics and symptoms of other syndromes that often coincide with AS are also discussed, for example AD/HD, learning disorders, and tics, as well as the temporary states of mental dysfunction that people with AS tend to be predisposed to, including depression, anxiety, obsessive and compulsive behaviors, and catatonia.
This informative and encouraging text highlights the positive aspects of autism spectrum conditions, such as diligence, fairness, and a knack for unique ideas, but it also acknowledges the daily challenges faced by young people with AS and, crucially, offers strategies for dealing with these. Using case examples, Yoshida explores the difficulties of disclosing a diagnosis, takes readers through the stages of practicing key social skills, and offers advice on seeking support.
Yuko Yoshida M.D. is a child psychiatrist at the Yokohama Psycho-Developmental Clinic in Japan, which specializes in diagnosing and treating children with autism spectrum and other developmental disorders. She is also Managing Director of the Institute of PsychoEducation for Children. She has over 20 years' clinical experience and has taken training courses taught by Lorna Wing and Judith Gould, and she is one of only a handful of professionals in Japan certified to use the Diagnostic Interview for Social and Communication Disorders (DISCO). She has previously authored a book on raising children with Asperger's Syndrome and has co-translated into Japanese The Autistic Spectrum: A Guide for Parents & Professionals by Lorna Wing.Permalink : https://www.cra-rhone-alpes.org/cid/opac_css/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=222 How To Be Yourself in a World That's Different : An Asperger's Syndrome Study Guide for Adolescents [Texte imprimé et/ou numérique] / Yuko YOSHIDA, Auteur ; Lorna WING, Préfacier, etc. ; Esther SANDERS, Traducteur . - Londres [Angleterre] : Jessica Kingsley Publishers, 2006 . - 112 p. : ill. ; 13,5cm x 21,5cm x 0,7cm.

Index Langues : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : SCI-D SCI-D - Neurosciences Résumé : Data compiled by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention indicates an alarming and continuing increase in the prevalence of autism. Despite intensive research during the last few decades, autism remains a behavioral defined syndrome wherein diagnostic criteria lack in construct validity. And, contrary to other conditions like diabetes and hypertension, there are no biomarkers for autism. However, new imaging methods are changing the way we think about autism, bringing us closer to a falsifiable definition for the condition, identifying affected individuals earlier in life, and recognizing different subtypes of autism.
The imaging modalities discussed in this book emphasize the power of new technology to uncover important clues about the condition with the hope of developing effective interventions. Imaging the Brain in Autism was created to examine autism from a unique perspective that would emphasize results from different imaging technologies. These techniques show brain abnormalities in a significant percentage of patients, abnormalities that translate into aberrant functioning and significant clinical symptomatology. It is our hope that this newfound understanding will make the field work collaborative and provide a path that minimizes technical impediments. Présentation : ill. Format : 17cm x 24,5cm x 2cm ISBN/ISSN/EAN : 978-3-11-040978-9 Note générale : Bibliogr., Index Langues : Anglais (eng) Mots-clés : Eye Tracking Index. décimale : COM-A COM-A - Communication - Langage - Orthophonie Résumé : In recent decades, a growing number of children have been diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), a condition characterized by, among other features, social interaction deficits and language impairment. Yet the precise nature of the disorder’s impact on language development is not well understood, in part because of the language variability among children across the autism spectrum. The contributors to this volume — experts in fields ranging from communication disorders to developmental and clinical psychology to linguistics — use innovative techniques to address two broad questions: Is the variability of language development and use in children with ASD a function of the language, such that some linguistic domains are more vulnerable to ASD than others? Or is the variability a function of the individual, such that some characteristics predispose those with ASD to have varying levels of difficulty with language development and use? Contributors investigate these questions across linguistic levels, from lexical semantics and single-clause syntax, to computationally complex phonology and the syntax-pragmatics interface. Authors address both spoken and written domains within the wider context of language acquisition. This timely and broadly accessible volume will be of interest to a broad range of specialists, including linguists, psychologists, sociologists, behavioral neurologists, and cognitive neuroscientists.
