[article]
Titre : Children with minor neurodevelopmental disorders. III: Neurological and neurodevelopmental problems at age 10 Type de document : Texte imprimé et/ou numérique Auteurs : I. Carina GILLBERG, Auteur Année de publication : 1985 Article en page(s) : p.3-16 Langues : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : PER Périodiques Résumé : Two previous papers have presented the results of behavioural and educational follow-up at age 10 of children diagnosed at age seven having minimal brain dysfunction (MBD), motor perception dysfunction (MPD) or attention deficit disorder (ADD), and normal control children. The present paper is concerned with the neurological and neurodevelopmental problems of these groups of children at age 10. 25 per cent of the children with severe MBD and almost 55 per cent with mild to moderate MBD had had neurological problems at age seven, but no longer had any demonstrable neurological deficit at age 10. The findings were similar in the MPD group, and the neurological status of the ADD group was similar to that of the controls. These findings are in contrast to the high rates of severe behavioural and/or school-achievement problems among the children in the MBD group, and indicate that the three-year prognosis with regard to neurological dysfunction is fairly good, but is gloomy as far as behavioural and school-achievement problems are concerned. [article]
Titre : Prevention of spastic paralytic dislocation of the hip Type de document : Texte imprimé et/ou numérique Auteurs : Vicki KALEN, Auteur ; Eugene E. BLECK, Auteur Année de publication : 1985 Article en page(s) : p.17-24 Langues : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : PER Périodiques Résumé : In a retrospective review of 99 children with spastic cerebral palsy, the efficacy of soft-tissue procedures alone in reducing early subluxation of the hip and preventing further subluxation and dislocation was determined. The indication for surgery was early subluxation of one or both hips. Surgery was either adductor tenotomy with or without anterior branch obturator neurectomy, or adductor tenotomy in combination with iliopsoas recession. Results were poor for 64 per cent after adductor tenotomy and anterior branch obturator neurectomy. For patients who also had iliopsoas recession the success rate was 72 per cent. Radiographic analysis showed that uncovering of the femoral head had halted or improved in 80 per cent of patients following iliopsoas recession. Titre : Preliminary support for the oral administration of valine, isoleucine and leucine for phenylketonuria Type de document : Texte imprimé et/ou numérique Auteurs : Mary Kay JORDAN, Auteur ; Helen K. BERRY, Auteur ; Robert L. BRUNNER, Auteur ; Melanie M. HUNT, Auteur Année de publication : 1985 Article en page(s) : p.33-39 Langues : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : PER Périodiques Résumé : Recent behavioral data have demonstrated the importance of maintaining low phenylalanine concentrations beyond early childhood in patients with phenylketonuria, which can be a difficult task, particularly during adolescence. Administration of certain large neutral amino-acids (valine, isoleucine, leucine--VIL) appears to reduce phenylalanine concentrations in the cerebrospinal fluid of humans and in the brain of rats. The present study compared neuropsychological test-performance of six patients with phenylketonuria during periods of VIL administration and periods when this supplement was not given. Although individual responses to VIL were variable, there was an over-all improvement of about 1 1/2 SD in neuropsychological test performance during VIL treatment. Abstract reasoning and tactile motor problem-solving increased more than pure motor performance. Permalink : https://www.cra-rhone-alpes.org/cid/opac_css/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=586

Titre : The psychological characteristics of infantile hypercalcaemia: a preliminary investigation Type de document : Texte imprimé et/ou numérique Auteurs : Rosemary ARNOLD, Auteur ; William YULE, Auteur ; Neil MARTIN, Auteur Année de publication : 1985 Article en page(s) : p.49-59 Langues : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : PER Périodiques Résumé : A sample of 23 children aged seven to 12 years with diagnoses of infantile hypercalcaemia was assessed on a battery of psychological tests and rating scales in an attempt to describe the psychological characteristics of this disorder. All children were found to have a mild or moderate degree of mental handicap. As a group, their expressive language skills were superior to their verbal comprehension. They displayed a high degree of behaviour and emotional disorders, most notably in terms of high levels of activity. Most children were reported as being highly sensitive to noise. This study clarifies some of the psychological correlates of infantile hypercalcaemia and some implications for management are suggested. MCMANUS, Auteur Année de publication : 1985 Article en page(s) : p.63-68 Langues : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : PER Périodiques Résumé : The prevalence of left-handedness and the degree of handedness were examined in 130 normal and mentally handicapped pupils of both sexes, aged between seven and 18 years. Handedness was assessed by means of 10 performance items. The prevalence of left-handedness among normal pupils (10.6 per cent) was significantly lower than that for the mentally handicapped group (26.5 per cent). There was no significant difference in the prevalence of left-handedness between the mentally handicapped pupils with and without Down's syndrome. The degree of handedness was also reduced in the mentally handicapped group, but again there was no difference between those with and without Down's syndrome.
