These differences are likely to impact the prevalence and age of identification for children with ASD. The purpose of the current study was to examine the specific state variations in ASD identification and eligibility criteria requirements. We examined variations by state in autism assessment practices and the proportion of children eligible for special education services under the autism category. Overall, our findings suggest that ASD identification practices vary across states, but most states use federal guidelines, at least in part, to set their requirements. Implications and recommendations for policy and practice are discussed. Titre : Brief Report: Effects of Pressure Vest Usage on Engagement and Problem Behaviors of a Young Child with Developmental Delays Type de document : Texte imprimé et/ou numérique Auteurs : Brian REICHOW, Auteur ; Mark WOLERY, Auteur ; Erin E. BARTON, Auteur ; Leslie GOOD, Auteur Année de publication : 2009 Article en page(s) : p.1218-1221 Langues : Anglais (eng) Mots-clés : Autism Pressure-vest Sensory-integration Treatment Intervention Index. décimale : PER Périodiques Résumé : The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of wearing a pressure vest for a young boy with developmental delays. An A-B-A withdrawal design was used to examine the relation between wearing the pressure vest and child behaviors during a preschool art activity. Although the data showed moderate variability, no systematic differences were found in child engagement when the vest was worn and when the vest was not worn and problem behavior increased when the vest was being worn. These results are discussed in the context of the study limitations. Implications for future research are provided. The purpose of the current investigation was to extend the research on the use of weighted vests for children with autism and developmental delays in a methodologically rigorous study. The study was conducted using an alternating treatment design. This allowed the comparison of three different conditions: weighted vest, vest with no weight (which served as a placebo), and no vest (which served as a baseline). The results showed no differentiation in engagement between conditions for any of the participants. Implications for practice and future research are provided. Titre : Evaluating Autism Diagnostic and Screening Tools for Cultural and Linguistic Responsiveness Type de document : Texte imprimé et/ou numérique Auteurs : Bryn HARRIS, Auteur ; Erin E. BARTON, Auteur ; Chantel ALBERT, Auteur Article en page(s) : p.1275-1287 Langues : Anglais (eng) Mots-clés : Autism Diagnostic assessment Screening Diverse populations Index. décimale : PER Périodiques Résumé : While clear guidelines and best practices exist for the assessment of autism spectrum disorders (ASD), little information is available about assessing for ASD in culturally and linguistically diverse (CLD) populations. CLD populations might be misidentified and under-identified with ASD due to the assessment practices that we employ. Four autism diagnostic tools and six autism screeners were selected and evaluated for their cultural and linguistic responsiveness. Although the evaluation of ASD within CLD populations is highly complex, this study identified the need for improved autism assessment tools and practices. Without the appropriate assessment of these populations, CLD children will likely continue to be misidentified (or not identified at all) and will miss crucial intervention opportunities. The identified articles were analyzed to describe the ages of individuals with autism, the settings in which the research occurred, the nature of the behaviors targeted for intervention, and the independent variables used. The data are analyzed in terms of shifts over time. These data were used to present a description of the changes in applied behavior analysis work related to individuals with autism.
