Purpose This study identified factors associated with the maltreatment of children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Methods A scoping review identified 15 studies documenting correlates of maltreatment in children with autism and their parents, families, and/or social context. Results The findings indicate that autistic girls experience maltreatment more often than autistic boys. Children on the autism spectrum are often reported for physical abuse, but these reports are not necessarily substantiated more often than reports concerning children with different disabilities or who have no disability. Although the associations are modest, several studies reveal that maltreated children with ASD experience more mental health problems, such as self-harm, anxiety, and aggression, than non-maltreated children with ASD. Parents of children diagnosed with ASD also have more mental health issues, including symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder. A few significant findings concern social correlates, including services, discrimination, or socioeconomic status. Conclusion These results can provide recommendations on questions, designs, and priority variables for future research projects. Specific recommendations are also made regarding assessment practices for maltreatment reports concerning children with ASD. |
