Titre : Brief Report: Effects of Pressure Vest Usage on Engagement and Problem Behaviors of a Young Child with Developmental Delays Type de document : Texte imprimé et/ou numérique Auteurs : Brian REICHOW, Auteur ; Mark WOLERY, Auteur ; Erin E. BARTON, Auteur ; Leslie GOOD, Auteur Année de publication : 2009 Article en page(s) : p.1218-1221 Langues : Anglais (eng) Mots-clés : Autism Pressure-vest Sensory-integration Treatment Intervention Index. décimale : PER Périodiques Résumé : The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of wearing a pressure vest for a young boy with developmental delays. An A-B-A withdrawal design was used to examine the relation between wearing the pressure vest and child behaviors during a preschool art activity. Although the data showed moderate variability, no systematic differences were found in child engagement when the vest was worn and when the vest was not worn and problem behavior increased when the vest was being worn. These results are discussed in the context of the study limitations. Implications for future research are provided. Titre : Comprehensive Synthesis of Early Intensive Behavioral Interventions for Young Children with Autism Based on the UCLA Young Autism Project Model Type de document : Texte imprimé et/ou numérique Auteurs : Brian REICHOW, Auteur ; Mark WOLERY, Auteur Année de publication : 2009 Article en page(s) : p.23-41 Langues : Anglais (eng) Mots-clés : Autism Early-intensive-behavioral-intervention Applied-behavior-analysis Lovaas Index. décimale : PER Périodiques Résumé : A 3-part comprehensive synthesis of the early intensive behavioral intervention (EIBI) for young children with autism based on the University of California at Los Angeles Young Autism Project method (Lovaas in Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology, 55, 3–9, 1987) is presented. The three components of the synthesis were: (a) descriptive analyses, (b) effect size analyses, and (c) a meta-analysis. The findings suggest EIBI is an effective treatment, on average, for children with autism. The conditions under which this finding applies and the limitations and cautions that must be taken when interpreting the results are discussed within the contextual findings of the moderator analyses conducted in the meta-analysis. YODER, Auteur ; Lauren TURNER, Auteur ; Mark WOLERY, Auteur ; Teresa ULMAN, Auteur ; Wendy L. STONE, Auteur Année de publication : 2007 Article en page(s) : p.401-412 Langues : Anglais (eng) Mots-clés : Motor-imitation Index. décimale : PER Périodiques Résumé : This study used a concurrent correlational design to examine associations between three types of motor imitation with objects and three proposed correlates in 32 two- and three-year-old children diagnosed with ASD. Attention-following and fine motor ability were significant, unique correlates of imitation in an observational learning context. Attention-following was a significant correlate of imitation in a direct elicitation context. Social reciprocity was a significant correlate of imitation in an interactive play context. These associations were observed after controlling for general developmental level. Results support previous findings that motor imitation may not reflect a unitary construct for children with ASD and that different skills may underlie the performance of different types of motor imitation. Implications for interventions targeting motor imitation are discussed. Titre : Effects of Structured Teaching on the Behavior of Young Children With Disabilities Type de document : Texte imprimé et/ou numérique Auteurs : Kathryn J. BENNETT, Auteur ; Brian REICHOW, Auteur ; Mark WOLERY, Auteur Année de publication : 2011 Article en page(s) : p.143-152 Langues : Anglais (eng) Mots-clés : TEACCH autism developmental delay early intervention Index. décimale : PER Périodiques Résumé : The effects of structured work systems based on the principles of structured teaching were evaluated with 3 preschool-aged children with developmental disabilities (2 children had autism). A withdrawal design was used with 2 participants, and a multiple baseline across stimuli was used with the other. During baseline, children were given 3 tasks to do with no structure or guidance. During intervention, a structured work system was provided, including organization of the physical structure, visual schedule, and predictable routines. Graduated guidance was used to teach the children use of the system. Use of the structured work system produced increases in engagement and the speed and accuracy of task completion along with decreases in stereotypic behavior and escape attempts. BARTON, Auteur ; Leslie GOOD, Auteur ; Joanna NEELY SEWELL, Auteur Année de publication : 2010 Article en page(s) : p.3-11 Langues : Anglais (eng) Mots-clés : autism-spectrum-disorders sensory-integration weighted-vests engagement Index. décimale : PER Périodiques Résumé : The use of weighted vests for children with autism spectrum disorders and developmental disabilities is a common practice as part of sensory integration therapy programs. The purpose of the current investigation was to extend the research on the use of weighted vests for children with autism and developmental delays in a methodologically rigorous study. The study was conducted using an alternating treatment design. This allowed the comparison of three different conditions: weighted vest, vest with no weight (which served as a placebo), and no vest (which served as a baseline). The results showed no differentiation in engagement between conditions for any of the participants. Implications for practice and future research are provided.
