Présentation : ill. Format : 24cm x 16cm x 2,5cm ISBN/ISSN/EAN : 978-1-60327-488-3 Note générale : Bibliogr., Index Langues : Anglais (eng) Mots-clés : Cholesterole Serotonine Excitotoxicité Neurotransmetteurs Testosterone Insuline Systeme immunitaire; Index. décimale : AUT-B AUT-B - L'Autisme - Ouvrages généraux et scientifiques Résumé : Creative thinking and collaborative scientific research have advanced our understanding of autism and we are now beginning to synthesize the data into evidence and theories. Autism: Current Theories and Evidence presents current theories about autism and the evidence that supports them. The goal is to show how the scientific method is revealing the biological bases of this spectrum of disorders, thereby leading the way to their treatment and prevention using evidence-based medicine. This book has 20 chapters divided into 6 sections: Molecular and Clinical Genetics; Neurotransmitters and Cell Signaling; Endocrinology, Growth and Metabolism; Immunology, Maternal-Fetal Effects and Neuroinflammation; Neuroanatomy, Imaging and Neural networks; and Environmental Mechanisms and Models. The subjects cover a wide range of current scientific work in the field of autism, with strong and growing evidence to support them, and demonstrate both the breadth and depth of current autism research. The reader is encouraged to consider how theories and the scientific method, in the hands of these and other dedicated researchers, are leading to greater knowledge and continued progress in autism research. Titre : Brief Report: Asperger’s Syndrome and Sibling Birth Order Type de document : Texte imprimé et/ou numérique Auteurs : Karmen SCHMIDT, Auteur ; Andrew W. ZIMMERMAN, Auteur ; Margaret L. BAUMAN, Auteur ; Christine FERRONE, Auteur ; Jacob VENTER, Auteur ; Jessaca SPYBROOK, Auteur ; Charles HENRY, Auteur Article en page(s) : p.973-977 Langues : Anglais (eng) Mots-clés : Asperger’s syndrome Pervasive developmental disorders Birth order Epidemiology Index. décimale : PER Périodiques Résumé : Prior investigations suggest that birth order position may be associated with the risk for developing a pervasive developmental disorder. This retrospective chart review examined the birth order status of 29 psychiatrically-referred patients with Asperger’s Syndrome (AS). Eighty-six percent of the subjects were first born. The finding was statistically significant when compared to an expected random distribution of AS subjects ?2 (1, N = 29) = 9.18, p 0.01. The reasons for such an association are unclear though birth stoppage, obstetric complications, and immunological mechanisms may play a role. ZIMMERMAN, Auteur ; M. MILES BRAUN, Auteur ; VAERS WORKING GROUP, CENTER FOR BIOLOGICS EVALUATION AND RESEARCH, FOOD AND DRUG ADMINISTRATION, MARYLAND, USA, Auteur Année de publication : 2007 Article en page(s) : p.301-310 Langues : Anglais (eng) Mots-clés : Adverse-event Autism Regression Vaccine Index. décimale : PER Périodiques Résumé : We report demographic and clinical characteristics of children reported to the US Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System (VAERS) as having autism or another developmental disorder after vaccination. We completed 124 interviews with parents and reviewed medical records for 31 children whose records contained sufficient information to evaluate the child's developmental history. Medical record review indicated that 27 of 31 (87%) children had autism/ASD and 19 (61.3%) had evidence of developmental regression (loss of social, language, or motor skills). The proportion of VAERS cases of autism with regression was greater than that reported in population-based studies, based on the subset of VAERS cases with medical record confirmation. This difference may reflect preferential reporting to VAERS of autism with regression. In other respects, the children in this study appear to be similar to other children with autism. Further research might determine whether the pathogenesis of autism with developmental regression differs from that of autism without regression.
