Titre : Executive Function/Attention Deficits in Boys with Asperger Syndrome, Attention Disorder and Reading/Writing Disorder Type de document : Texte imprimé et/ou numérique Auteurs : Agneta NYDEN, Auteur ; Christopher GILLBERG, Auteur ; Erland HJELMQUIST, Auteur ; Mikael HEIMAN, Auteur Article en page(s) : p.213-228 Langues : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : PER Périodiques Résumé : Executive function/attention deficits were examined in children with Asperger syndrome, attention disorder and reading/ writing disorder and in a group of normal children. Neuropsychological tests as well as cognitive tasks measuring different components in the processing of information were used. The measures were divided into Mirsky’s four components of attention, namely ‘sustain’,‘focus-execute’,‘shift’ and ‘encode’. All abnormal groups differed markedly from the normal group on measures of executive function/attention. The group diagnosed as having attention disorder showed the most consistent difficulties. However, no specific marker of ‘executive function deficits’ that could represent the three different disorders was found. [article]
Titre : The Outcome of a Supported Employment Scheme for High-Functioning Adults with Autism or Asperger Syndrome Type de document : Texte imprimé et/ou numérique Auteurs : Lynn MAWHOOD, Auteur ; Patricia HOWLIN, Auteur Article en page(s) : p.229-254 Langues : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : PER Périodiques Résumé : The article describes the outcome of a 2 year supported employment project for high-functioning adults with autism. Thirty individuals with a diagnosis of autism or Asperger syndrome living within the London area took part in the scheme. The control group comprised 20 individuals of similar intellectual and linguistic ability, and previous employment history, living in metropolitan areas out-side London. Over the course of the project significantly more of the supported group than the controls found work; job levels were higher; they were in work for a greater percentage of the time; and they received significantly higher wages. Thirteen different employers (mostly multinational companies) were involved during the course of the project and several were willing to take more than one employee because of their positive experience of employing someone with autism. Although existing resources within the disability employment service hadnot previously been able to provide effective job finding and support services for this group, the current scheme demonstrated that, with specialist input, supported employment can be very effective. Moreover the costs, although initially high, reduced significantly over time. One of the most expensive and time-consuming aspects of the scheme, but one that appeared to be crucial for success, was the need for close liaison with employers in order to explore appropriate job opportunities and to match these carefully to the skills and abilities of individual clients. However, although some elements of the scheme can continue to be supported through government funding, no financial provision is available for this initial and essential stage of job finding. If programmes of this kind are to continue to provide help for individuals with autism, it is crucial that such funding is provided. Individual and family therapy for individuals with this condition has received little attention in the literature. This article presents three case examples of individual and family therapy with male adolescents diagnosed with Asperger syndrome. Common presenting issues and treatment interventions are summarized that may apply to others diagnosed with this condition. [article]
Titre : The Experience of Parents in the Diagnosis of Autism: A Pilot Study Type de document : Texte imprimé et/ou numérique Auteurs : Kenny MIDENCE, Auteur ; Meena O’NEILL, Auteur Article en page(s) : p.273-285 Langues : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : PER Périodiques Résumé : Research literature on experiences of parents seeking a diagnosis of autism for their child is scarce. In order to explore this, a pilot study was conducted with four parents of children with autism in North Wales. Semi-structured interviews were conducted to elicit parents’ experiences, and the responses analysed using a grounded theory approach. Six core categories emerged. These included parents’ difficulties in understanding their child’s behaviours and the confusion that resulted from their inability to make sense of these behaviours, and problems in obtaining a diagnosis. The findings also reflect parents’ experience of relief after the correct diagnosis was made. This appeared to enable them to understand and accept autism and the limitations imposed on their child; to improve adaptation to the condition within the family life; and to foster more realistic expectations of their child’s future. Titre : Autism: The Teacher’s View Type de document : Texte imprimé et/ou numérique Auteurs : Sarah HELPS, Auteur ; I. C. NEWSOM-DAVIS, Auteur ; Maria CALLIAS, Auteur Article en page(s) : p.287-298 Langues : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : PER Périodiques Résumé : Frequently changing conceptualizations of autism have caused widespread confusion over its precise nature and aetiology. This study aimed to investigate teachers’ views of autism, together with their training needs. The Stone Autism Questionnaire (1987) was modified and used to evaluate the level of knowledge and understanding among a sample of 72 teaching and support staff from four mainstream and four special (non-autism) schools in South London. Ten mental health professionals working in the field of autism completed the same questionnaire as a ‘control’ measure for comparison. Teachers and support staff were found to hold a number of views about autism that were significantly different from those of mental health professionals; the majority had received little or no training regarding the disorder. All three groups were unanimous in their demand for more training. The results have serious implications for the educational experiences and developmental achievements of children with autism in schools in England.
