"Asperger Syndrome in the Inclusive Classroom: Advice and Strategies for Teachers will become a 'security blanket' for teachers first experiencing Asperger Syndrome in their classroom. This book is a common-sense approach to working with these children. … The book discusses adaptations in the classroom, teaching of academic subjects, special subject classes, unstructured school time, and social and emotional concerns of children with Asperger Syndrome. … Teachers who read this book will now say, 'I'm getting a child with Asperger Syndrome; let's work together and make this a positive experience for everyone.'"
- from the Foreword by Peter W. Riffle, 2005 National Veterans of Foreign Wars Citizenship and Education Teacher of the Year 2000 Disney American Teacher Award Special Education Honoree
Asperger Syndrome in the Inclusive Classroom offers support and practical techniques for teachers who work with children with Asperger Syndrome (AS).
Based on the successful experiences of classroom teachers, and written from a teacher's perspective, this book provides creative and easy-to-apply strategies that support and encourage AS students in the mainstream classroom, from organization and time management techniques to framing classroom instructions to make lessons more accessible for children with AS. The authors' straightforward, practical advice relates to every part of the school day and includes advice for teaching specific subject areas. Titre : Martian in the Playground : Understanding the Schoolchild with Asperger's Syndrome Second Edition Type de document : Texte imprimé et/ou numérique Auteurs : Clare SAINSBURY, Auteur Editeur : Londres [Angleterre] : Sage Publications Année de publication : 2010 Collection : Lucky Duck Books Importance : 144 p. Format : 17cm x 24cm x 1cm ISBN/ISSN/EAN : 978-1-84920-000-4 Note générale : Bibliogr. Langues : Anglais (eng) Mots-clés : Education Index. décimale : ASP-K ASP-K - Asperger - Scolarité Résumé : .
`This deceptively little book contains more truth and provides more insight into what it is like to have Asperger's Syndrome than many a weighty tome on the subject. It offers a view from the inside, but it is not yet another autobiography. Admirably and refreshingly, the author has refrained from giving an account solely based on her own experiences. Instead she sets out observations from 25 different suffers, giving often astonishing and sometimes harrowing glimpses of what actually happens to a child with Asperger's Syndrome in the classroom, in the playground, in the lunch queue and at home' - The Journal of Child Psychology and Psychiatry
This award-winning book illuminates what it means to be a person who has Aspergers Syndrome by providing a window into a unique and particular world. Drawing on her own experience of schooling, and that of a network of friends and correspondents who share her way of thinking and responding, Clare Sainsbury reminds us of the potential for harm which education holds for those who do not fit.
This book holds insights that take us beyond the standard guidance on how to manage autistic spectrum disorder. It challenges the way we might handle obsessional behaviour.
It invites us to celebrate the pure passion of the intellect, which such obsessions can represent, and to recognise the delight which can be experienced by children who love to collect. It reminds us that many of the autistic mannerisms we might try to suppress actually help the child to think.
This revised edition includes an additional introduction and extensive summary of research in the field of Asperger's Syndrome, both by Tony Attwood.

He has temper tantrums when he is angry and sometimes finds it hard to pay attention. He might even have been to a special school to learn how to behave appropriately in class. One day this kid started to ask questions like, "Why do I feel different - am I not like other kids?" This kid might be a little different from others in some ways ... but this kid is NOT STUPID! Can you solve the mystery of the special kid?'
This book offers a fun and accessible introduction for a child diagnosed with Asperger Syndrome (AS).
Intended as a support tool in the initial period after diagnosis, A Special Book About Me is varied and engaging, and addresses questions or concerns that the child might have, such as 'What are the characteristics of AS?', 'Why did it happen to me?', and 'What happens now?'. Also included are poems, stories, illustrations and activities to help them come to terms with and move forward from a diagnosis of AS.
A Special Book About Me will be essential reading for children in the initial period after a diagnosis of AS.
