There's something different about Dad. He gets upset when we're even a minute late for dinner, he is angry at noisy family gatherings, and he really likes talking about buses. He is also always on time to pick us up from school, helps with our homework for hours on end, and has a detailed knowledge of car engines that has saved day trips from breakdown disaster. It's ok that there's something different about Dad!
Following the story of Sophie and Daniel whose Dad, Mark, is on the autism spectrum, this heart-warming comic reveals the family's journey from initial diagnosis to gradual appreciation of Dad's differences. The family learn the reasons behind Dad's difficulties with communication, the senses, flexibility, and relationships, and find ways to make family life easier for everyone. It is an informative, light-hearted and reassuring look at growing up with a parent on the autism spectrum. [Résumé d'Auteur/Editeur]

He has temper tantrums when he is angry and sometimes finds it hard to pay attention. He might even have been to a special school to learn how to behave appropriately in class. One day this kid started to ask questions like, "Why do I feel different - am I not like other kids?" This kid might be a little different from others in some ways ... but this kid is NOT STUPID! Can you solve the mystery of the special kid?'
This book offers a fun and accessible introduction for a child diagnosed with Asperger Syndrome (AS).
Intended as a support tool in the initial period after diagnosis, A Special Book About Me is varied and engaging, and addresses questions or concerns that the child might have, such as 'What are the characteristics of AS?', 'Why did it happen to me?', and 'What happens now?'. Also included are poems, stories, illustrations and activities to help them come to terms with and move forward from a diagnosis of AS.
A Special Book About Me will be essential reading for children in the initial period after a diagnosis of AS.
Josie Santomauro is a full-time writer living in Brisbane, Australia. Her son, Damian, was diagnosed with AS at the age of five. She has written numerous fiction books for children and young adults, and several books on AS. Titre : A Step-by-Step ABA Curriculum for Young Learners with Autism Spectrum Disorders (Age 3-10) Type de document : Texte imprimé et/ou numérique Auteurs : Lindsay HILSEN, Auteur Editeur : Londres [Angleterre] : Jessica Kingsley Publishers Année de publication : 2013 Importance : 384 p. Format : 27,9cm x 21,6cm x 2cm Accompagnement : 1 CD ISBN/ISSN/EAN : 978-1-84905-928-2 Langues : Anglais (eng) Mots-clés : Mathématiques Catégorisation Index. décimale : APP-A APP-A - ABA - FBA - Approches Comportementales Résumé : This curriculum uses the proven principles of applied behavior analysis (ABA) as a way to monitor the progress of children on the autism spectrum and make sure they reach their full potential. It gives adults a clear outline on what to teach and how to teach it, in order to ensure children are reaching developmental goals at this crucial stage.
The book's three sections, Assessment, Curriculum and Mastered, each include built-in data collection, which is reproduced on the accompanying CD so it can be printed off. All three sections cover ten pivotal areas of progress for this age group, including reading, writing, math, conversation and social skills. The Assessment section records the child's initial level of learning and then tracks their progress over time. The Curriculum section provides the lesson plans for the skills which need to be developed, and the Mastered section is a tool for checking that learnt skills are being retained over time. It is also possible to record whether the child has adapted to using the skills in a variety of settings.
This curriculum provides everything that an adult working with a child with an autism spectrum disorder would need to ensure a thorough and appropriate ABA program for the young learner.
