The Prevalence of Youth with Autism Spectrum Disorders in the Criminal Justice System / Catherine A. CHEELY in Journal of Autism and Developmental Disorders, 42-9 (September 2012)
[article]
Titre : The Prevalence of Youth with Autism Spectrum Disorders in the Criminal Justice System Type de document : Texte imprimé et/ou numérique Auteurs : Catherine A. CHEELY, Auteur ; Laura A. CARPENTER, Auteur ; Elizabeth J. LETOURNEAU, Auteur ; Joyce S. NICHOLAS, Auteur ; Jane CHARLES, Auteur ; Lydia B. KING, Auteur Année de publication : 2012 Article en page(s) : p.1856-1862 Langues : Anglais (eng) Mots-clés : Autism Autism spectrum disorders Criminality Juvenile justice Index. décimale : PER Périodiques Résumé : Past surveys have reported high rates of youth with disabilities in the juvenile justice system, however, little research has examined the frequency with which youth with Autism spectrum disorders (ASD) are in contact with law enforcement. Using records linkage with the Department of Juvenile Justice and the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division and the South Carolina Autism and Developmental Disabilities Monitoring Program (SC ADDM), this study compares the frequency, type, and outcome of criminal charges for youth with ASD and non-ASD youth. Youth with ASD had higher rates of crimes against persons and lower rates of crimes against property. Youth with ASD were more likely to be diverted into pre-trial interventions and less likely to be prosecuted than comparison youth. When compared to the overall SC ADDM sample, charged youth were less likely to have comorbid intellectual disability. Titre : Training Community Mental Health Therapists to Deliver a Package of Evidence-Based Practice Strategies for School-Age Children with Autism Spectrum Disorders: A Pilot Study Type de document : Texte imprimé et/ou numérique Auteurs : Lauren BROOKMAN-FRAZEE, Auteur ; Amy DRAHOTA, Auteur ; Nicole STADNICK, Auteur Année de publication : 2012 Article en page(s) : p.1651-1661 Langues : Anglais (eng) Mots-clés : Autism spectrum disorders Therapist training Challenging behaviors Community mental health services Evidence-based practice Index. décimale : PER Périodiques Résumé : Research on moving evidence-based practice (EBP) intervention strategies to community service settings for children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) is urgently needed. The current pilot study addresses this need by examining the feasibility, acceptability and preliminary outcomes of training therapists practicing in community mental health (CMH) clinics to deliver a package of EBP strategies aimed to reduce challenging behaviors in school-age children with ASD. Results indicate that CMH therapists participated in both initial and ongoing training, were able to deliver the intervention with fidelity, and perceived the intervention strategies as useful. Parents participated in almost all sessions with their children and remained in therapy when therapists delivered the intervention. Meaningful reductions in child problem behaviors occurred over 5 months providing promising support for the intervention. Titre : What is the effect on children with autism who witness incidents of challenging behaviour at school? Type de document : Texte imprimé et/ou numérique Auteurs : Benazir CHOUDRY, Auteur Année de publication : 2012 Article en page(s) : p.31-39 Langues : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : PER Périodiques Résumé : This study considers the effects on children with autism who witness episodes of challenging behaviour at school. It was conducted in an independent autism specialist school for children aged 4 to 16 years. Thirty-four staff and eight children were involved in the study. Data were
gathered from questionnaires and interviews and from structured observations. Staff noticed that some children with autism were negatively affected during and immediately after witnessing challenging behaviour. As yet though, there is no real evidence on how best to support children following these incidents and further research is needed to establish this. The author makes the point that chiidren with autism have different profiles and communicative ability and just because some children appear not to be affected does not mean that they have not been upset by what they witness. The Editors of this Journal would welcome more papers on this topic.Permalink : https://www.cra-rhone-alpes.org/cid/opac_css/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=166
