Meta-Analysis of Studies Incorporating the Interests of Young Children with Autism Spectrum Disorders into Early Intervention Practices / Carl J. DUNST in Autism Research and Treatment, (March 2012)
[article]
Titre : Meta-Analysis of Studies Incorporating the Interests of Young Children with Autism Spectrum Disorders into Early Intervention Practices Type de document : Texte imprimé et/ou numérique Auteurs : Carl J. DUNST, Auteur ; Carol M. TRIVETTE, Auteur ; Deborah W. HAMBY, Auteur Année de publication : 2012 Article en page(s) : 10 p. Langues : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : PER Périodiques Résumé : Incorporating the interests and preferences of young children with autism spectrum disorders into interventions to promote prosocial behavior and decrease behavior excesses has emerged as a promising practice for addressing the core features of autism. The efficacy of interest-based early intervention practices was examined in a meta-analysis of 24 studies including 78 children 2 to 6 years of age diagnosed with autism spectrum disorders. Effect size analyses of intervention versus nonintervention conditions and high-interest versus low-interest contrasts indicated that interest-based intervention practices were effective in terms of increasing prosocial and decreasing aberrant child behavior. Additionally, interest-based interventions that focused on two of the three core features of autism spectrum disorders (poor communication, poor interpersonal relationships) were found most effective in influencing child outcomes. Implications for very early intervention are discussed in terms addressing the behavior markers of autism spectrum disorders before they become firmly established. Titre : Object interest in autism spectrum disorder: A treatment comparison Type de document : Texte imprimé et/ou numérique Auteurs : Andrea MCDUFFIE, Auteur ; Rebecca G. LIEBERMAN, Auteur ; Paul J. YODER, Auteur Année de publication : 2012 Article en page(s) : p.398-405 Langues : Anglais (eng) Mots-clés : autism intervention object interest play randomised RPMT Index. décimale : PER Périodiques Résumé : A randomized control trial comparing two social communication treatments for children with autism spectrum disorder examined the effect of treatment on object interest. Thirty-two children, 18–60 months, were randomly assigned to the Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS) or Responsive Education and Prelinguistic Milieu Teaching (RPMT) condition. Assessment of object interest was conducted in an unstructured play session with different toys, activities, adult, and location than experienced in treatment. Results indicated children in the RPMT condition showed greater increases in object interest as compared to children in the PECS condition. Because child characteristics such as interest in objects may influence response to interventions using object play as contexts for treatment, it is important to improve our understanding of whether intervention can affect object interest. RAY-SUBRAMANIAN, Auteur ; Susan Ellis WEISMER, Auteur Année de publication : 2012 Article en page(s) : p.2113-2120 Langues : Anglais (eng) Mots-clés : Restricted and repetitive behaviors (RRBs) Language Autism Nonverbal cognitive skills Toddlers Preschoolers Index. décimale : PER Périodiques Résumé : This study examined whether language skills and nonverbal cognitive skills were associated with clinician-observed restricted and repetitive behaviors (RRBs) in a sample of 115 children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) at ages 2 and 3. By age 3, RRBs were significantly negatively correlated with receptive and expressive language, as well as nonverbal cognitive skills. Increases in receptive and expressive language from age 2 to 3 significantly predicted decreases in RRBs, controlling for age in months, time between visits, and gains in nonverbal cognitive skills. This study contributes to the limited research that has examined early patterns and predictors of RRBs in young children with ASD.
