Quest Program I. Social Skills Curriculum for Elementary School Students with Autism / JoEllen CUMPATA
Titre : Quest Program I. Social Skills Curriculum for Elementary School Students with Autism : Ready to use lessons with games, role-play activities, and more! Type de document : Texte imprimé et/ou numérique Auteurs : JoEllen CUMPATA, Auteur ; Susan FELL, Auteur Editeur : Arlington (Texas) [Etats-Unis] : Future Horizons Année de publication : 2015 Importance : 313 p. Présentation : ill. Format : 21,5cm x 27,5cm x 2,3cm Note générale : Bibliogr., Index Langues : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : HAB-A HAB-A - Habiletés Sociales - Méthodes et Programmes Résumé : The QUEST Program I was developed to address the needs of elementary students with social skills and pragmatic language weaknesses. Because these children benefit from regular instruction and practice, the program uses an intensive proactive approach to teach social skills by combining written instruction with games, experiential stories, and role play, which results in discussion, friendly feedback from peers, and realworld experience. Even when provided with an inclusive education in a general education setting, these students do not typically interpret social cues, nuances and rules of interaction in the same way as their peers, which is the reason the program maximizes generalization of skills both in and outside the classroom. The goals of the program are to help students gain a better understanding of human behavior and interaction and to provide opportunities to become familiar and comfortable with the social skills and pragmatic language necessary to be successful at school and in the community. The question is not why, but why not? With inclusive education becoming
the norm in schools nationwide, teachers often struggle to address students non-academic needs, but
teachers need ready-to-use lessons that won't interfere with their curriculum. Quest Program II is a social
skills program created to help middle school students with autism who struggle with social skills and pragmatic
language.
Developed by a school social worker and speech language pathologist, the program uses an intensive,
proactive approach to teaching social skills, combining written instruction with games, activities, and student
interaction. Six helpful units: School Survival Basics, Understanding and Managing Emotions, Communication
Skills, Making Friends and Interacting with Peers, Personal Safety, Vocational Readiness can be implemented
either chronologically or on their own.
Evidence-based research supports the methods used and students have a great time learning-by-doing,
through role-play and real-world experience. Parents are kept in the loop with email updates and evaluations.
Everyone wins with this program! Best of all, the book includes a CD of printable worksheets, letters, forms,
and more! QUEST Program II covers: Greetings, Paying Attention, Daily Hygiene, Asking for Help,
Understanding Feelings, Getting Angry/Calming Down, Managing Stress, Starting a Conversation, Making and
Keeping Friends, Gossiping, Bullying, and Teasing, Resisting Peer Pressure, Dating, Internet and E-mail
Safety, and many more!

'Dr. Heather MacKenzie has used a unique blend of theories of personality type, multiple intelligences and mediated learning to create an elegant and practical method. I have seen how well the application of the Learning Preferences and Strengths model works for children with autism. It is my firm belief that this method has broad applicability for any learner.'
- Teeya Scholten, Ph.D., Registered Psychologist
'This is a practical, inspiring and stimulating book.'
- Allison Waks, M.A., Registered Psychologist
Reaching and Teaching Children with Autism provides a positive approach to understanding and educating children on the autism spectrum. The book gives greater insight into the perspective and behavior of a child with autism and explores how the child's learning preferences, strengths and interests can be used to facilitate learning and enhance motivation.
Based on well-researched theory and extensive clinical experience, the author provides a comprehensive model for developing lifelong independent learning skills in children with autism between the ages of 3 and 12 years old. The book describes the underlying principles, learning preferences and strengths typical of children with autism and offers a detailed but flexible program structure based on these concepts. Easy to follow activities and approaches are described in each chapter, along with clear examples and illustrations.
This accessible and practical book is an essential resource for parents, teachers, support workers, therapists and others concerned with learning and development in children with autism.Permalink : https://www.cra-rhone-alpes.org/cid/opac_css/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=720 Reaching and Teaching the Child with Autism Spectrum Disorder : Using Learning Preferences and Strengths [Texte imprimé et/ou numérique] / Heather MACKENZIE, Auteur . - Londres [Angleterre] : Jessica Kingsley Publishers, 2008 . - 272 p. : ill. ; 24,6cm x 17,3xm x 1,7cm.
