Research has relied on measures developed for non-Asperger’s syndrome populations that require reporting past experiences of anxiety, which may confound assessment in people with Asperger’s syndrome due to problems with autobiographical memory as are often reported in this group.Experience sampling methodology was used to record real-time everyday experiences in 20 adults with Asperger’s syndrome and 20 neurotypical adults. Within-subject analysis was used to explore the phenomenology of thoughts occurring in people with Asperger’s syndrome when they were anxious. Comparisons were made with the group that did not have Asperger’s syndrome. The Asperger’s syndrome group were significantly more anxious than the comparison group. Factors associated with feelings of anxiety in the Asperger’s syndrome group were high levels of self-focus, worries about everyday events and periods of rumination lasting over 10 min. People in the Asperger’s syndrome group also had a tendency to think in the image form, but this was not associated with feelings of anxiety. The results are discussed with reference to psychological models of Asperger’s syndrome, cognitive models of anxiety and implications for psychological therapy for this group. In the ASD group, the use of dampening and other-blame reduced mood while savouring and emotional acceptance improved mood. The use of self-blame and avoidance negatively impacted mood only in the non-ASD group, suggesting the use of these two strategies do not reduce mood in individuals with ASD. ER and mental health interventions should capture ER strategy use and aim to decrease maladaptive strategy use and increase adaptive strategy use. Therefore, we compared the motivation for real-life social engagement between preschool children with ASD and typically developing (TD) peers from the caregivers' perspectives using the self-determination theory (SDT) and experience sampling methodology (ESM). The SDT helped us to examine the impact of living contexts on the motivation for social engagement, and the ESM allowed us to record objective and subjective experiences in real time across natural settings. Method Thirty preschool children with ASD and 30 matched TD peers were recruited. Caregivers carried mobile devices to record their children?s social experiences repeatedly over seven days. Multilevel modelling was used for analysis. Results Regardless of ASD, preschool children were more likely to be autonomous and intrinsically motivated while engaging in social play/leisure activities, but less likely to be autonomous, competent, and intrinsically motivated in non-play/leisure activities involving social interactions. The ASD group was also less likely to care about others or to be cared about in social play/leisure activities. Conclusions The findings highlight that the motivation for social engagement in preschool children with ASD is situation-specific and emphasize the importance of providing a supportive environment and encouraging engagement in social play/leisure activities.
