Titre : Behavioural and Emotional Disturbance in High-Functioning Autism and Asperger Syndrome Type de document : Texte imprimé et/ou numérique Auteurs : Bruce J. TONGE, Auteur ; Avril V. BRERETON, Auteur ; Kylie M. GRAY, Auteur ; Stewart L. EINFELD, Auteur Article en page(s) : p.117-130 Langues : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : PER Périodiques Résumé : This study aimed to determine whether there were differences in behavioural and emotional disturbance (psychopathology) between children and adolescents with high-functioning autism and Asperger syndrome. Subjects consisted of 75 children and adolescents with high-functioning autism and 52 with Asperger's disorder (DSM-IV diagnoses). Psychopathology was measured using the Developmental Behaviour Checklist. Analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) controlling for the effects of age and cognitive level was used to determine whether the groups differed in their levels of psychopathology. It was found that children and adolescents with Asperger's disorder presented with higher levels of psychopathology than those with high-functioning autism, were more disruptive, antisocial and anxious, and had more problems with social relationships. The implications of these findings are discussed. En ligne : http://dx.doi.org/10.1177/1362361399003002003 Permalink : https://www.cra-rhone-alpes.org/cid/opac_css/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=208

Titre : Enhancing Vocal Imitations in Children with Autism Using the IBM Speech Viewer Type de document : Texte imprimé et/ou numérique Auteurs : Vera BERNARD-OPITZ, Auteur ; N. SRIRAM, Auteur ; Sharul SAPUAN, Auteur Article en page(s) : p.131-147 Langues : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : PER Périodiques Résumé : This experiment compared the effect of computerized visual feedback (computer assisted instruction) with traditional play interaction (personal instruction) in promoting vocal imitation in children with autism. Ten non-verbal children with autism participated in ten sessions. Each session was composed of four sections: a parent and a trainer interacted with the child on the computer or using play interactions. The study was conducted as a simultaneous treatment design and the sequence of experimental conditions was randomized across sessions. Participants showed significantly greater vocal imitations in the computer assisted instruction condition, compared with the personal instruction condition. This trend was present in nine out of ten children. Vocal imitations increased across the sessions, with greater increments in the computer assisted instruction condition. These effects were consistent across both parent and trainer. This association has also been described in several previous reports. Although no firm conclusions can be drawn on the basis of case reports alone, it appears that autistic disorders may increase vulnerability to such psychoses. Possible reasons for the association are discussed, as is treatment. The use of clinical assessment techniques derived from personal construct psychology is described and four case studies are presented to illustrate the potential utility of this approach. The advantages and disadvantages of such an approach are discussed. The scheme is funded by a joint Health and Social Services grant and ran as a pilot project until January 1999. This article reports on the progress made during the first 15 months of the scheme by examining the philosophy behind the scheme and the practicalities of providing effective community support to people with a diagnosis of Asperger syndrome. Case studies have been included to illustrate support methods in practice, and all names have been changed to maintain confidentiality. Measures of progress within the first year of the scheme were evaluated through attendance rates, observation, reviews, and the comments of the clients and carers themselves.
